Kentucky vs. Tennessee Prediction: Can Otega Oweh, Wildcats Complete Season Sweep Over Vols in Sweet 16?

The Kentucky Wildcats have already beaten the Tennessee Volunteers twice this season. Can they make it a third on the biggest stage of March Madness? Matt MacKay thinks Otega Oweh and the Wildcats may just have Tennessee's number, and explains why in his Kentucky vs. Tennessee prediction and best bet for the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.

Kentucky vs. Tennessee Prediction: Can Otega Oweh, Wildcats Complete Season Sweep Over Vols in Sweet 16?

We've got an inter-conference matchup between two SEC teams when the Kentucky Wildcats take on the Tennessee Volunteers in the Sweet Sixteen on Friday night. These opponents are very familiar with each other, with Kentucky sweeping the regular season series, 2-0.

The Volunteers will have revenge on their mind with an Elite Eight bid at stake in Lucas Oil Stadium tonight. Meanwhile, the Wildcats have one of the tournament's most explosive offenses, outscoring their first two opponents by a total of 28 points. Tennessee's defense will try to contain Kentucky, while elevating its scoring production on the court Friday night.

NCAAB handicapper Matt MacKay is here to share his favorite bet to place on this Sweet Sixteen matchup between 3-seed Kentucky and 2-seed Tennessee, using the latest odds. Follow Matt's X account for more NCAAB betting insight and free picks during March Madness.

Kentucky vs. Tennessee Prediction

Oddsmakers have set the lines in this Kentucky vs. Tennessee Sweet Sixteen matchup to -4.5 in favor of the Volunteers on the point spread and 144.5 on the point total line. Since opening at -4.5, Tennessee briefly became available at -3.5, before being bought back up to its original -4.5 price. The point total has fluctuated, opening at 145.5, climbing up to 146.5, before climbing down to 144.5.

The Wildcats are 26-9 ATS this season, beating Tennessee on the road and at home. The Volunteers are 25-11 ATS and 13-23 on the point total under. Meanwhile, Kentucky is 28-7 on the point total over. They beat Tennessee 78-73 in January and 75-64 in Lexington on February 11th.

Both lineups are healthy and ready to roll into tonight's Sweet Sixteen tilt. Kentucky is led by G Otega Oweh, averaging 16.3 points per game. Their enforcer in the front court is 6-10 senior F Amari Williams, averaging 10.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. The Wildcats have six players averaging double-digit production on the court tonight, while Tennessee only has three players with double-figure scoring averages.

It's no secret that these teams have completely different philosophies when it comes to style of play. Kentucky is high tempo, ranked 16th for pace (72.6) compared to Tennessee with a 328th (65.2) pace score. So far, this disparity has worked in favor of the Wildcats.

The primary edge Tennessee holds is its defense and ability to grab rebounds. The Volunteers rank 17th in defensive rating (96.4) and 41st in offensive rating (114.4), while the Wildcats are 19th in offensive rating (116.7) and 217th in defensive rating at 106.0.

This game comes down to whether Tennessee can force Kentucky into missed shots and eliminate second-chance scoring opportunities, or the Volunteers getting hot in the offensive end. Their back court is the primary scoring production, from Chaz Lanier, Zakai Zeigler and Jordan Gainey, each averaging between 11 and 18 points per game.

I like how Williams measures up against Tennessee's front court tandem of Igor Milicic and Felix Okpara. Kentucky ranks 23rd in true shooting percentage, meaning they are highly efficient with their shot-taking. Tennessee ranks 81st in this metric, which accounts for 2-pointers, 3-pointers, and free throw attempts.

The Volunteers are 35th in total rebound percentage (53.6%) and Kentucky is 99th at 52.1 percent. Thus far, Tennessee hasn't been pushed in the NCAA Tournament, controlling the game flow against 15-seed Wofford and 2-seed UCLA. Tennessee hasn't scored more than 77 points in either of these matchups.

Kentucky has played stiffer competition, like Troy's stout defense that won the Sun Belt Conference, as well as overcoming a red-hot Illinois offense in an 84-75 win as underdogs against the Fighting Illini.

The Wildcats have won four of their past five head-to-head matchups against the Volunteers dating back to February 2023. When they lose, they tend to lose big. In their past nine games, Kentucky has three blowout losses, both against 1-seed Alabama and 1-seed Auburn.

Tennessee has lost to 6-seed Ole Miss and 1-seed Florida in its last nine games. Key wins include an 80-75 win over Auburn in the SEC Tournament and a 79-76 buzzer-beater win over Alabama on March 1st.

This is a tough game to handicap, especially since it's between conference opponents with such contrasting styles. It's difficult to beat a team on a short point spread three times in one season, which is where Kentucky finds itself ahead of this Sweet Sixteen matchup. Yet they are 31st in field goal percentage (48.1%) compared to Tennessee at 134th (45.5%).

Let's bet a unit and grab the points with Kentucky +4.5 in a game that may come down to the final possession in Indianapolis on Friday night.
