Alabama vs. Michigan Prediction: Can Latrell Wrightsell Keep Bama Close with Dominant Wolverines in Sweet 16?

Two high-powered teams meet Friday night in Chicago with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line, and this has all the makings of one of the best games of the Sweet 16. Michigan has looked every bit like a national title contender through the first weekend, while Alabama has kept rolling even without Aden Holloway, turning up the scoring and finding enough answers to reach another regional semifinal.

The Wolverines come in as 9.5-point favorites in a game with a massive total of 172.5, which tells the full story of the matchup. Michigan has more size, more balance, and the cleaner path to controlling the game, but Alabama’s tempo and perimeter firepower give the Tide a real chance to make this uncomfortable if they can find enough scoring around Labaron Philon Jr. and Latrell Wrightsell Jr.

Wrightsell is the player to watch for Alabama if this turns into the kind of back-and-forth game the number suggests. With Holloway still out, the Tide need secondary scoring to keep up with Michigan’s depth, and Wrightsell is coming off a 24-point outing against Texas Tech after Alabama dropped 90 in each of its first two tournament wins.

Alabama vs. Michigan recent results

Michigan enters at 33-3 after opening the tournament with a 101-80 win over Howard and a 95-72 win over Saint Louis. The Wolverines poured in 196 total points across those two games and reached the Sweet 16 for the seventh straight NCAA tournament appearance dating back to 2017.

Alabama comes in at 25-9 after beating Hofstra 90-70 in the first round and then routing Texas Tech 90-65 in the second. The Tide are back in the Sweet 16 for a program-record fourth straight year, and Wrightsell’s scoring jump against Texas Tech was a major reason why.

Alabama vs. Michigan Preview, Injuries, Lineup News

Michigan has looked terrifying offensively so far in this tournament. The Wolverines scored 101 against Howard and 95 against Saint Louis, and they have done it with real balance, not just one player carrying the load. Yaxel Lendeborg, Aday Mara, Morez Johnson Jr., Nimari Burnett, and Elliot Cadeau all give Michigan different ways to attack, which is a major problem for an Alabama defense that has been good enough to advance but will be tested much more here.

The biggest issue for Alabama is that Holloway remains unavailable, which means the Tide have less margin for error against a deeper and bigger opponent. Alabama can still fly offensively, and the win over Texas Tech proved that, but Michigan is far better equipped to punish empty possessions and control stretches with its frontcourt. That is especially important in a game with such a high total, because Michigan does not need to win a track meet one-on-one. It can score in waves through multiple options.

That said, Alabama has a very clear path to making this competitive. The Tide have already shown they can generate elite 3-point volume without Holloway, and Wrightsell is the kind of scorer who can keep a game afloat when the stars draw the most attention. He hit six 3s against Texas Tech and has helped fill the void in Alabama’s offense during this tournament run. In this game, if Michigan tilts heavily toward Philon and the primary creators, Wrightsell is exactly the type of shooter and secondary scorer who can punish it.

The challenge is that Michigan has the size to make Alabama work for everything inside while still having enough offensive firepower to answer runs. Alabama can score, but the Wolverines have been more consistent, more balanced, and more imposing through the first two rounds. That is why Michigan deserves to be favored, even if the Tide have enough punch to make this one of the better games of the night.

Alabama vs. Michigan Best Bet

Wrightsell has already shown he can shoulder more of the offensive burden in Holloway’s absence, and Alabama needs his scoring badly in a matchup where matching Michigan bucket for bucket is the only way to stay alive. After going for 24 points against Texas Tech, this line still feels playable for a guard who should see plenty of volume in a game with a 172.5 total.
