5 Minute ReadMichigan State vs. UConn Prediction: Can Jeremy Fears Jr. Lift Spartans Over Huskies in Sweet 16?
Two blue bloods and two legendary coaches meet Friday night with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line. UConn enters as a slight favorite after the market moved from Huskies -1.5 to -2.5, while Michigan State arrives with the profile of a team built to make this a 40-minute fight.
This matchup has all the ingredients to be one of the best games of the Sweet 16. UConn has looked sharper over the last week, but Michigan State rebounds at an elite level and has enough toughness and shot-making to stay within striking distance if Jeremy Fears can provide the offensive spark the Spartans need.
Michigan State vs. UConn Recent Results
Michigan State enters at 27-7 overall and reached the Sweet 16 by beating North Dakota State in the first round and Louisville 77-69 in the second round. The win over Louisville was powered by a standout effort from Coen Carr and gave Tom Izzo another second-weekend appearance with a team that continues to lean on rebounding and toughness.
UConn comes in at 31-5 overall and advanced by beating Furman in the first round before taking down UCLA 73-57 in the second round. The Huskies separated from UCLA with a dominant defensive second half, and Alex Karaban plus Tarris Reed Jr. have been major reasons UConn looks more settled entering this matchup.

Michigan State vs. UConn Preview, Injuries, Lineup News
This game should be decided by whether Michigan State can generate enough offense in the half court. The Spartans rebound at a high level and can make UConn work physically, but the concern is shot creation. UConn’s defense has tightened up, and Michigan State is not built to win a flowing offensive game against a disciplined opponent unless Fears becomes a real scoring threat.
UConn’s side of the equation is cleaner. The Huskies have gotten strong tournament production from Karaban and Reed, and they looked much more like themselves against UCLA once the game settled into a defensive grind. They also have the kind of balance that makes them hard to scheme against, because the scoring burden does not fall on just one player.
That balance is a big reason the Fears points angle stands out. Michigan State will likely need more offense from him than usual to keep pace, especially if UConn makes life difficult for the frontcourt and forces the Spartans to rely on guard scoring. The current prop case for Fears clearing 14.5 is also supported by his recent scoring profile and by the reality that Michigan State needs him to do more than just organize the offense in a game of this magnitude.
The total sitting at 136.5 also tells the story. Oddsmakers expect a physical game with long half-court possessions, which puts a premium on efficient guard play. In that kind of setting, Fears’ usage matters even more, because Michigan State cannot afford passive stretches from its lead ball-handler if UConn gets its usual shot-making from Karaban and the supporting cast.

- Pick: Jeremy Fears Jr. Over 14.5 Points (-114) Check out the best odds at Caesars Sportsbook
Michigan State needs all the offense it can get in this matchup, and Fears is the clearest candidate to take on that extra scoring responsibility. With UConn capable of spreading the floor and sharing offense across several pieces, the Spartans need their lead guard to attack, get downhill, and put real pressure on the Huskies for 40 minutes.
