The matchup starts with Boozer. He had 22 points and 13 rebounds against Siena, then erupted for 17 second-half points against TCU, so he is clearly the focal point of everything Duke wants to do in big moments. That is exactly why St. John’s will build this game around crowding him, making catches harder, and forcing Duke’s other creators and shooters to decide it.
That approach makes sense against this opponent. Duke is still elite, but St. John’s has the kind of disruptive profile that can at least limit clean touches for a star forward. The Red Storm’s pressure and physical style are also a big reason national analysts see this as one of the more dangerous Sweet 16 draws for Duke.
The counter for Duke is that its offense is not only Boozer. Isaiah Evans, Cayden Boozer, and the rest of the perimeter group can punish overhelp if St. John’s sells out too hard to the ball. That is what makes this game so compelling: St. John’s probably can take away Duke’s first look often enough, but doing that for 40 minutes without giving up enough threes or secondary drives is much harder.
On the other side, St. John’s is coming in with real momentum. The Red Storm have now won 21 of their last 22 games, and their confidence under Pitino is obvious. They do not need this game to be pretty. They just need it to stay rugged, lower-possession, and uncomfortable enough to keep Duke from ever fully settling in.
St. John’s is good enough defensively to make Duke sweat, and the Red Storm should be able to keep this from turning into a track meet. Still, Duke has already responded once after a shaky tournament start, and its overall talent, half-court scoring, and shot-making should be enough to survive another tough test. Expect a competitive game, but one where Duke eventually makes the bigger plays late.
