Tennessee and Iowa State close out Thursday night’s Sweet 16 slate in what looks like one of the best games of the round. Iowa State is a slight favorite, but the entire matchup turns on the status of star forward Joshua Jefferson, who remains a game-time decision after spraining his left ankle in the first round.
If Jefferson is able to go, Iowa State gets back one of its most important two-way pieces, a forward who averages 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists. If he is out or clearly limited, the Cyclones lose their most reliable frontcourt stabilizer and put even more pressure on Tamin Lipsey, Milan Momcilovic, and the rest of the rotation to carry the scoring and rebounding load.
Tennessee has a real path here because of its size, physicality, and defensive toughness, and that is where Felix Okpara becomes a major factor. The Vols need the veteran big man to finish plays, protect the rim, and hold up down low against Iowa State’s front line, especially if Jefferson is active enough to give the Cyclones real minutes.

This should be a classic Sweet 16 contrast. Iowa State brings elite defensive pressure and one of the nation’s best turnover-forcing units, while Tennessee counters with high-level defense of its own, strong rebounding, and enough half-court shot creation to stay in a grind.
The Jefferson discussion hangs over everything. He is officially a game-time decision, and while Iowa State proved against Kentucky that it can win without him, Tennessee is built to test the exact areas where his absence is felt most, especially frontcourt depth, rebounding support, and interior playmaking.
If Jefferson plays and looks close to himself, Iowa State deserves to be favored because the Cyclones defend at an elite level and have more ways to create turnovers and easy points. If he is out or clearly compromised, Tennessee has a much better chance to control the glass and make this a one-possession game late.
That is also why Okpara matters so much. Tennessee does not need him to dominate touches, but it does need him to finish around the rim, run the floor, and punish smaller or thinner Iowa State lineups if Jefferson cannot handle a full workload.
