The Portland Fire visit the New York Liberty on Monday, May 25, at 8 p.m. ET on Peacock and NBCSN in the third meeting between these teams already this season. Portland stunned New York 98-96 on a buzzer-beating putback in the first matchup, then the Liberty answered with a 100-82 win in the rematch.

Portland has already shown it is not an ordinary expansion team. The Fire beat the Liberty at the buzzer in the first meeting, then dominated the second half against the Tempo in the first matchup between the WNBA’s two new expansion franchises. Emily Engstler had 16 points and seven rebounds in that win, and Portland’s depth stood out with seven players scoring at least six points. That kind of balance matters against a Liberty team still trying to get its rotation fully settled.
New York’s concern is chemistry. Ionescu had 11 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and only one turnover in her return, but she missed her final seven shots as Dallas pulled away. The Liberty also allowed Dallas to shoot 15-for-35 from three, and the defense has now had too many communication breakdowns for a title favorite with this much talent. Satou Sabally and Ionescu being back raises the ceiling, but Sunday showed it may take more than one game for the full group to mesh.
The talent gap still points toward New York winning outright.
