That victory continued a run in which Minnesota has repeatedly been installed as a relatively small road favorite against quality opponents and simply won anyway. The Lynx recently beat Las Vegas 92-87 on the road and have consistently found ways to finish close games against contenders.
Washington is one of the few teams with direct evidence that it can disrupt Minnesota. The Mystics went into Target Center on June 21 and won 84-79, holding the Lynx to 19 fourth-quarter points. Minnesota answered three days later in Washington, but only by a 78-76 score. Across two meetings, the Mystics have actually outscored Minnesota 160-157.
Washington is also playing well again after its seven-game winning streak was stopped by consecutive losses in Las Vegas. The Mystics rebounded with an 80-70 win over Los Angeles and then handled Toronto 93-82 on Wednesday, with Kiki Iriafen producing 21 points and 13 rebounds in the latest victory.
The potential letdown spot is difficult to ignore.
