Lamont Roach Jr. meets William Zepeda in a 12-round main event for the vacant WBC lightweight championship on Saturday night. This is a matchup between Roach’s controlled counterpunching and Zepeda’s extreme volume. Roach has not received an official victory since stopping Feargal McCrory in the eighth round of their June 2024 super featherweight title fight. He moved up to lightweight and appeared to outbox Gervonta Davis for long stretches in March 2025, but the judges returned a majority draw after a controversial ninth-round sequence was not scored as a knockdown. Roach then challenged Isaac Cruz at 140 pounds and fought to another majority draw, finishing strongly after being dropped in the third round and landing more power punches across the full fight.
Zepeda built his record through overwhelming activity, winning 33 consecutive fights before challenging Shakur Stevenson for the WBC title in July 2025. He previously defeated former champion Tevin Farmer twice, earning a close split decision in their first meeting before retaining the interim title in the rematch. Stevenson ultimately exposed the limits of Zepeda’s pressure, winning a clear unanimous decision by scores of 118-110, 118-110 and 119-109, but Zepeda still forced one of boxing’s best defensive technicians to engage for extended stretches.
Roach represents another technically difficult opponent, but he does not possess Stevenson’s movement, reach or ability to control every exchange from long distance. Roach is comfortable standing his ground and countering in the pocket, which creates opportunities for clean combinations but also places him directly in Zepeda’s preferred range. Returning to 135 pounds after competing against Cruz at 140 could further test Roach’s conditioning if Zepeda immediately attacks the body and forces a high-output fight.
Zepeda must avoid becoming predictable as he advances. Roach can punish straight-line pressure with counters, change angles after exchanges and steal close rounds through cleaner accuracy. However, the Mexican challenger regularly throws combinations deep into rounds and should force Roach to work at a much higher pace than the favorite prefers. That activity can influence the judges even when Roach lands the more precise individual punches.
