After a 3-0 start, the Auburn Tigers under first-year head coach, Hugh Freeze, have spiraled into three consecutive losses, all against SEC opponents. Its offense has looked pedestrian, scoring only one passing touchdown during this stretch, while its defense has been gashed against the run.
Lane Kiffin has led the No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels to a 5-1 record, with their only loss coming on the road 24-10 to Alabama. Ole Miss' biggest win came a couple of weeks ago in a 55-49 shootout over LSU at home. Now, they travel to Auburn, Alabama to extend their winning streak to three games, with a chance to move into the top-ten.
After Auburn dominated this head-to-head matchup in recent years, Ole Miss came out on top with a 48-34 win in 2022. Can the Rebs continue to rack up points under Kiffin on the road against Auburn? Ole Miss vs. Auburn Prediction
Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart has been a big-time playmaker for the Rebels this season, recording 16 total touchdowns, with a 6:1 touchdown to interception ratio, completing 64.1 percent of his pass attempts and relying on his mobility to serve as Ole Miss' second-leading rusher.
Quinshon Judkins is the bell cow in Ole Miss' backfield, handling 108 carries and recording over 540 scrimmage yards and seven total touchdowns. He's going to be the primary assignment for Auburn's defense to contain, which could open up more downfield opportunities for wideouts Jordan Watkins, Dayton Wade, and Tre Harris, who have recorded 10 of the Rebs' 13 receiving touchdowns this season.
Auburn's offense needs to figure it out quickly. Quarterback Payton Thorne is completing just over 60 percent of his pass attempts, with four touchdowns and four interceptions, while only 6.4 passing yards per attempt. The Tigers' willingness to rely on a two-headed backfield between Jarquez Hunter and Payton Thorne, each tallying over 50 carries this season, indicates their lack of trust in Thorne as a passer.
Unfortunately for Auburn, Ole Miss is much more stout against the run than the pass, so it's going to be an uphill battle that could result in another lopsided loss. Oddsmakers have the spread at -6.5 favoring the Tigers on the road, but this feels like it's too low. Yes, interconference prime time matchups can be competitive, like we just saw between Ole Miss and Arkansas, but Auburn doesn't have much juice on either side of the line of scrimmage to keep this game close, despite only losing 27-20 to Georgia a couple of weeks ago.
The Tigers are 2-4 ATS, compared to Ole Miss' 4-2 ATS record, which will improve to 5-2 ATS, as the Rebs win by at least a touchdown in Auburn on Saturday night. Let's hammer Ole Miss -6.5 at -105 odds on FanDuel.
