Southern Miss vs. South Alabama Prediction

Southern Miss has yet to beat an FBS opponent this season as they have lost five straight games and are coming off a close loss to Old Dominion two weeks ago. While Southern Miss has not been notching wins, they have been a lot more competitive over their last three games as they only lost by a score to Arkansas State, lost by four to Old Dominion, and were able to score 36 points against Texas State so there have been some silver linings for this Golden Eagles team.

While this is basically a lost season for Southern Miss, this could be a spot where they play up. Their opponent tonight, South Alabama, is coming off a blowout of ULM two weeks ago and now return home off of a bye to face this USM squad. South Alabama has only played two home games to this point, and have not fared too well in each. In their first home game against FCS Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) they were tied at halftime before going on to win 35-17, but failed to cover the 1H or full game spread.

Now fast forward to their second home game against Central Michigan and it was more of the same. The Jaguars actually jumped out to an early 14-0 lead against CMU before the Chippewas stormed back as the score was 14-13 at halftime. Central Michigan would go on to win the game straight up 34-30 as 14.5-point underdogs.

This is now two straight below-average performances at home for this South Alabama team who has simply played down to their opponents, a common theme for them on the season. South Alabama has seemed to play to the level of their opponents this season as we saw them play up against Oklahoma State when they went into Stillwater and blew out the Cowboys 33-7 as 7.5-point underdogs then followed that performance up by losing as 14.5-point favorites against Central Michigan, as mentioned above.

For whatever reason, this South Alabama team just has not had that killer instinct against lesser opponents and I believe Southern Miss has the talent to take advantage of that tonight. With that being said, I am rolling with Southern Miss 1H +10.5 at -108 for 1.5u as one of my most confident college football plays of the day for tonight's action as I think the Golden Eagles keep this game somewhat close and respectable through the first 2 quarters of this game tonight.
