Western Kentucky vs. Southern Miss Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for New Orleans Bowl

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will meet the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in the New Orleans Bowl on Tuesday afternoon. Can the Golden Eagles emerge victorious after late sharp line movement? Let's take a look at this WKU vs. Southern Miss prediction and best bet from McBets for Tuesday, December 23rd.

Western Kentucky vs. Southern Miss Prediction: Can Golden Eagles Triumph in New Orleans Bowl?

At first glance, this matchup looks fairly even, which is exactly why the betting market has been bouncing around all week. But when you dig into how these two teams are trending and how the matchup sets up in the trenches, Southern Miss stands out as the more trustworthy side to win this game outright.

Western Kentucky enters bowl season off a frustrating finish. A narrow loss at LSU was understandable, but following it up with a road loss to Jacksonville State that kept the Hilltoppers out of the Conference USA title game left a sour taste. While WKU has been consistent about reaching bowl games under Tyson Helton, this team didn’t finish the season playing its best football.

Western Kentucky vs. Southern Miss Prediction - New Orleans Bowl

The quarterback change to freshman Rodney Tisdale Jr. has added some mobility and upside, but it’s also introduced volatility. Tisdale is talented, but he’s still inexperienced, and that matters against a defense that thrives on creating chaos. Southern Miss’ secondary has been elite at baiting quarterbacks into mistakes all season, leading the country in interceptions. Asking a freshman quarterback to handle pressure, disguise coverage and protect the football in a bowl environment is a tall task.

Western Kentucky’s biggest weakness has been its inability to stop the run or generate negative plays. The Hilltoppers have been consistently gashed up front, allowing over five yards per carry while failing to get home on opposing quarterbacks. That’s a dangerous combination against a Southern Miss offense that is comfortable leaning on the run and staying ahead of the chains.

Southern Miss may be disappointed with how its season ended, but that disappointment can be a powerful motivator. This is a team that believed it should be playing for a conference championship, not simply closing out the year in a bowl. With Blake Anderson now in place as the permanent head coach, this game matters. Players know who’s leading them moving forward, and there’s something to prove after three underwhelming performances to close the regular season.

Offensively, Southern Miss has the best player on the field in Braylon Braxton. He’s been dynamic all season, capable of extending plays and punishing defenses that can’t get pressure consistently. Against a WKU front that struggles to disrupt anything, Braxton should be able to operate comfortably, especially if the Eagles establish the run early and force the Hilltoppers to commit extra bodies to the box.

Defensively, Southern Miss has quietly been one of the more improved units in Conference USA. The front can generate pressure, and the secondary has been excellent at limiting explosives and capitalizing on mistakes. That combination is critical against a Western Kentucky offense that wants to throw the ball downfield but hasn’t always protected its quarterback well.

This feels like a spot where Southern Miss wins the line of scrimmage, controls the tempo and forces Western Kentucky into uncomfortable situations early. With a veteran quarterback, a motivated roster and a clear edge defensively, the Golden Eagles are the side I want backing in a game that should be played on their terms.
