4 Minute ReadMiami vs. Indiana Prediction: Targeting the Total in CFP National Championship Game on Monday Night
Tonight sets up as one of the cleanest tempo and matchup unders on the board as the Miami Hurricanes take on the Indiana Hoosiers in the College Football Playoff National Championship with two top-5 defenses.
First, the environment. Hard Rock Stadium has been an under friendly building for two decades. Since 2005, unders there are 72-55 overall, and when the total is 47 or higher, it has still leaned under at a strong clip, with games landing about 1.8 points below the closing number on average. That does not win the bet by itself, but it supports what the matchup is already screaming.

Miami vs. Indiana Prediction
The biggest driver is pace. Both Miami and Indiana are bottom 10 nationally in seconds per play. That matters because totals in the high 40s require either explosive scoring or a ton of snaps. This game projects for neither. Both teams want to play slow, stay on schedule, and lean on the run to create long drives.
Miami under Mario Cristobal is built for clock draining football. The Canes want to run inside zone, lean on the offensive line, and turn possessions into 10 to 12 play marches. Indiana is one of the best in the country at stopping that style, so Miami is unlikely to live in second and short all night. And once Miami gets pushed into late downs, Indiana has the exact type of defense that can stall drives, with pressure packages that have bothered every quarterback it has seen.
That is especially relevant for Carson Beck. When he is kept clean, the numbers are strong. When he is pressured, it falls off a cliff. Indiana is built to make you play in those uncomfortable third down moments, and Miami is not an explosive offense that can bail itself out with quick strike touchdowns. Even in big games this year, Miami has put up 17 and 10 against elite defenses. That is the scoring range we are living in if Indiana controls early downs.
On the other side, Indiana’s offense is more complete, but the matchup is not a layup. Miami’s defense has been elite since Halloween, and it wins on late downs with a pass rush that can wreck a game plan. Indiana has scored 20 and 13 against top tier defenses this season, and Miami fits that mold, especially with how it can speed the quarterback up when the situation becomes obvious passing.
Put it together and the script is obvious. Slow tempo, run first tendencies, long drives, and two defenses that are at their best in the exact moments that flip totals from over to under, third down and red zone. Unless we get short fields or fluky explosive scores, 48 is simply too much runway.
