Liberty travels to Brooks Stadium for a 7:30 PM ET kickoff on ESPN, entering as a 2.5-point road favorite with the total sitting at 50.5. The Flames are 2-1 after consecutive home wins, while Coastal Carolina is 1-2 and coming off a 22-14 road loss at Delaware.
There is significant familiarity surrounding this matchup. Chadwell spent five seasons as Coastal Carolina's head coach and went 39-22 with the Chanticleers before eventually taking over at Liberty. He now returns to Brooks Stadium as an opposing head coach in a rivalry that Liberty leads by the narrowest possible 8-7 margin.
Liberty vs. Coastal Carolina Recent Results

Liberty's offense finally broke through last week in a 51-15 win over Ball State. The Flames scored on six of their first seven drives, finished with 460 total yards and produced a balanced 212 rushing yards and 248 through the air. Purdie completed 13 of 20 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns, giving him five touchdown passes without an interception through his first three Liberty starts.
That performance followed a 20-13 loss at James Madison and a narrow 24-23 win over Gardner-Webb. Liberty finished just 4-8 with a 3-5 CUSA record last season, so the 51-point explosion was encouraging without necessarily establishing this as a consistently high-scoring offense yet.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (1-2), (0-0 Sun Belt)
Coastal Carolina has been much more volatile offensively. The Chanticleers fell behind West Virginia 24-0 in the opener before Bailey led a furious second-half rally, finishing with 373 passing yards and three touchdowns in a 31-24 loss. Coastal then overwhelmed Fordham 45-7 as Bailey threw three more touchdowns.
The momentum disappeared last week in the 22-14 loss at Delaware. Coastal enters Thursday having lost two of its first three after finishing 6-7 overall and 5-3 in the Sun Belt last season. Ryan Beard is also in his first full season leading the program, creating another layer of transition opposite a Liberty staff that knows Coastal exceptionally well.

Liberty leads the series 8-7, and four of the last five completed meetings have been decided by three points or fewer. Three of the 15 all-time games have required overtime.

The 2020 Cure Bowl was the most memorable recent meeting, with Liberty beating a Chadwell-coached Coastal team in overtime. Liberty vs. Coastal Carolina Line Movement and Betting Splits
DraftKings betting splits show a considerably stronger preference for Liberty on the side than on the total. Roughly four-fifths of the spread action has been backing Liberty -2.5, while the moneyline is also heavily tilted toward the Flames.
The total has a different profile. More individual wagers have landed on the Over, while Under money has run ahead of its ticket share in multiple updates. One current DraftKings reading had the Under taking 62% of the handle despite just 43% of the bets, an indication that the larger average total wager was positioned below 50.5.
Liberty vs. Coastal Carolina Prediction
Liberty's 51-point eruption against Ball State is the biggest obstacle to the Under, but it is worth separating one breakout performance from the larger offensive sample. The Flames scored 13 against James Madison and only 24 against Gardner-Webb before everything clicked against a Ball State defense that allowed Liberty to score on six of its first seven possessions.
Purdie's efficiency is encouraging for Liberty, particularly because he has avoided interceptions. But an offense can play efficiently without creating a shootout. Liberty has enough depth in the backfield to stay balanced and should have little incentive to turn a Thursday road rivalry game into a high-possession track meet if it can establish the run.
Coastal's passing ceiling is much more dangerous. Bailey threw for 373 yards at West Virginia and has already shown he can create explosive plays when the Chanticleers fall behind. The problem has been generating complementary rushing production and avoiding stretches where the offense disappears. Coastal managed only 52 rushing yards at West Virginia before its passing-game comeback.
Liberty's defense also enters with encouraging late-game numbers. The Flames held Ball State to 261 total yards and have yet to allow a fourth-quarter point this season, outscoring opponents 28-0 in the final period. That matters for a total because the final 15 minutes are often where an Under gets destroyed by late touchdowns after the game has already been decided.
The short week should also favor a simpler offensive approach. Both teams played Saturday and now turn around five days later, leaving less installation time and putting additional value on familiarity, rushing efficiency and avoiding mistakes. Chadwell's knowledge of Coastal's program adds another reason Liberty should be well prepared for what it sees.
Coastal has already shown that it can play low-scoring football when its passing game is contained. The Chanticleers scored only 14 last week, while Liberty has only one game all season in which it exceeded 24 points before the Ball State explosion. Neither offense needs to be bad for 50.5 to prove slightly too high.
The biggest danger is a repeat of Coastal's second-half performance at West Virginia, where Bailey created touchdowns quickly through the air. But Liberty has allowed only one opposing quarterback to reach 300 passing yards since the beginning of 2024, and the Flames should enter this matchup with an unusually detailed understanding of the opposing program.

The 51 points Liberty scored last week make the Over easy to chase, but the broader matchup points toward fewer possessions and a more difficult environment for explosive offense. Liberty can control stretches with its rushing game, while Coastal has been inconsistent enough that asking the Chanticleers to provide half of a 51-point total is aggressive.
A competitive rivalry game does not have to become a shootout. Something in the 27-20 range allows both quarterbacks to make plays while keeping the game beneath 50.5.
