Illinois enters Ohio Stadium at 2-1 after beating Southern Illinois 48-10, while Ohio State is also 2-1 after a 59-3 demolition of Kent State. Kickoff is set for noon ET on FOX, with the Buckeyes laying nearly four touchdowns.
The talent gap is obvious, but Illinois gets a massive number with a veteran quarterback who has already faced Ohio State in his career. The question is less about whether the Illini can threaten the upset and more about whether Ohio State creates enough offensive separation to clear 27 points.

Illinois rebounded from its early loss by beating Southern Illinois 48-10. Houser threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns, giving the Illini the type of efficient passing production they will need if Ohio State takes away the running game.
Houser's experience matters more in this matchup than raw statistics against an FCS opponent. He has already started against Ohio State during his college career, so the atmosphere and defensive speed will not be entirely unfamiliar.

The loss to Texas remains the more useful data point because it showed Ohio State can be forced into a lower-scoring game against a defense capable of matching its physicality. Illinois does not have Texas' talent, but it does not need to win those matchups outright with 27 points in hand.

The total has also attracted overwhelming Over support. That creates a game where the obvious public script is Ohio State scoring enough to run away, while the underdog case depends on Illinois making the Buckeyes work deeper into the game.

Ohio State has enormous advantages at the skill positions and along the defensive front. Illinois cannot allow the Buckeyes to create short fields because the spread becomes nearly impossible to defend if Sayin repeatedly starts drives near midfield.
Houser gives Illinois a path to avoid that script. A veteran quarterback who can identify pressure and get the ball out quickly is significantly more useful as a four-touchdown underdog than an inexperienced passer trying to make explosive plays on every possession.
The Illinois offense also enters with confidence after producing 48 points and 305 passing yards from Houser. The Illini do not need to reach 30. Something in the 17-to-21-point range dramatically changes the equation because Ohio State would then need to score into the high 40s to comfortably cover +27.
Ohio State's defense is certainly capable of preventing that production, but the Buckeyes also have little reason to expose starters deep into the fourth quarter if they build a comfortable lead. A 35-10 or 38-14 game can be completely controlled by Ohio State while remaining inside the number.
Last year's 34-16 result provides a useful template. Illinois did not threaten to win, but it avoided the catastrophic stretches necessary for Ohio State to create a four-touchdown margin. The current spread demands more separation than the Buckeyes produced in that meeting.
The key for Illinois is staying respectable on first down. If Houser repeatedly faces third-and-long, Ohio State's pass rush will create turnovers and short fields. If the Illini can stay on schedule, they can burn enough clock and string together enough first downs to shorten the game.
