Utah enters Ames at 3-0 after shutting out Utah State 33-0, while Iowa State is 2-1 after a 55-7 victory over Bowling Green. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET on FOX at Jack Trice Stadium.
The Utes are favored by more than a touchdown, but the total of 48.5 is the more interesting market. Both teams have capable quarterbacks, yet the combination of conference-opening intensity, defensive strength and Iowa State's willingness to play conservatively creates a legitimate Under case.

Utah improved to 3-0 by beating Utah State 33-0, producing its most complete defensive performance of the season. Dampier has thrown for 690 yards through three games and adds another dimension with his mobility.
The Utes have enough offensive talent to score, but their identity still allows them to win without playing at an extreme pace. That matters on the road against an Iowa State defense that has already played one low-scoring rivalry game.
Iowa State Cyclones (2-1), (0-0 Big 12)
Iowa State bounced back from a 16-13 loss at Iowa by beating Bowling Green 55-7. The Cyclones also opened with a 38-10 win over Southeast Missouri.
The Iowa result is the more useful comparison for Saturday. Against a physical defense, Iowa State struggled to create scoring opportunities and was pulled into a field-position game.
Utah vs. Iowa State Head to Head
Iowa State leads the all-time series 5-1 and won the first Big 12 meeting between the programs in 2024.

Utah vs. Iowa State Line Movement and Betting Splits
The total has stayed around 48.5, but DraftKings betting is overwhelmingly positioned on the Over. Roughly 90% of total tickets and essentially all tracked handle have landed above the number.
The side is also popular toward Utah, with the Utes taking more than 60% of tickets and approximately 85% of spread money. The total therefore offers the cleaner contrarian angle.
Utah vs. Iowa State Prediction
Utah's offense has enough explosiveness to threaten this Under, particularly with Dampier's ability to create outside structure. Iowa State cannot allow quarterback scrambles to turn defended plays into 20-yard gains.
But Utah does not need a shootout to win comfortably. The Utes just shut out Utah State and can lean on their defense and rushing game if they build an early lead.
Iowa State's offense is the more important side of the total. The Cyclones scored only 13 against Iowa and now face another physical defense capable of controlling the line of scrimmage.
The Iowa State home environment should help, but it can also reinforce a conservative game plan. Matt Campbell's teams are comfortable punting, playing field position and waiting for turnovers rather than creating unnecessary offensive risk.
Utah's road debut adds another reason for an initially slower game. Communication and tempo often take time to settle in the first conference road environment, particularly against a defense comfortable disguising pressure.
The market is overwhelmingly expecting points. That may be influenced by both teams' Week 3 blowouts, but Bowling Green and Utah State are poor comparisons for the defensive challenge each offense faces here.
