New York Jets vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Game Pick: TNF Prediction and Odds

The 7-7 New York Jets play host tonight to the 6-8 Jacksonville Jaguars in a short-week AFC showdown. The Jaguars have snuck back into the playoff race with Trevor Lawrence playing at a high level. The Jags have won three of their last four games to move to 6-8 and are in the hunt for a postseason spot. Meanwhile, the Jets have lost three games in a row after sitting at a promising 7-4, but there is still some hope for a wild card spot. With both teams desperately needing a win, who can we expect to see step up?

New York Jets vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Prediction

The player that has really stepped up for the Jags on offense is Evan Engram. Engram has been on fire the last three games, and he has led the Jags in yards in one of them and targets in the last two. Trevor Lawrence has shown favor towards Engram in the last few games, as Evan Engram has tallied 25 combined targets over the last two games. Against Tennessee, Engram hauled in 11 catches on 15 targets for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Last week, he had eight receptions on 10 targets for 62 yards.

Engram currently sits third on the team with 610 receiving yards this season, averaging 43.5 per game. Over his last three games, he is averaging 84.6 per game. Engram had a few stagnant games in the middle of the season, but it looks like his usage is back up, and Lawrence has been looking his way often, and he should again tonight.

The Jets have a notoriously stout secondary this season. The Jets are only allowing 120 yards per game to wide receivers, which is second in the NFL behind the Broncos. The Jets rank seventh in DVOA against opposing No. 1 wide receivers, which is because of Sauce Gardner, who is the best rookie cornerback in the league. That seventh-place ranking is also with Gardner missing some games due to injury, so it would be even higher. They also rank sixth against opposing No. 2 wide receivers. The cornerback duo of Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed is deadly to face, which is why so many teams have had to look for shorter passes in the flat and check downs.

Because of this, the Jets rank much lower against tight ends. The Jets allow the 13th most yards to tight ends per game at 53. Enter Evan Engram, who is coming off the three best games of the season. On top of all of this, it is expected to be rainy, windy, and cold, which does not favor the long ball. Instead, this kind of weather favors shorter passes, which favors Engram's production as well. This, on top of Gardner and Reed covering the wideouts all night, leads me to favor Engram's receiving prop tonight. He has easily passed this line in back-to-back games, and he should again tonight.
