Las Vegas Raiders vs. Detroit Lions Prediction
It may be a surprise that this is a bet on Josh Jacobs, given his down year so far, but this is a game Jacobs can take over. I don't mean on the ground, either, but rather through the air. Josh Jacobs led the league with 1,653 rushing yards last season, but he has not gotten it going on the ground yet this year. Through seven games, Jacobs has just 347 rushing yards, averaging 49.5 per game. He is averaging just 2.9 yards per carry, but it doesn't help that the Raider's passing game has not set him up like last year.
Last year, Jacobs was a good receiving back as well, racking up 400 receiving yards. He averaged 23 receiving yards per game overall. His line tonight is 19.5. Jacobs had 20+ receiving yards in 8 of his 17 games last season, but he may see more action through the air this year. Jimmy Garoppolo likes the short and quick passes, which was a large part of the San Francisco scheme he was so used to. Through seven games, Jacobs is already averaging 30 receiving yards per game, which isn't that much lower than his rushing yards.
The Lions are allowing the second-lowest rushing yards per game across the league this season. They have been stuffing the run, and Jacobs may not have success on the ground in this game. Due to that, I expect the Raiders to look at him as a receiving target.
Garoppolo is coming back from injury and will like those short routes and dump-offs, which are perfect for running backs. When Jacobs gets going downfield, he can take off and get chunk plays. Also, the Lions are probably going to have a sizeable lead in this game, shying the Raiders off the run in a negative game script.
Jacobs has had 4+ targets in every game since week one and has had 5+ in five of those. If he catches even three, he should be able to break 20 yards, although I think he has an opportunity to go higher than that. He has two games of 50+ receiving yards already this season, and this could be his third.
