This is a textbook divisional underdog spot. Since the start of 2022, road underdogs of more than a touchdown inside their division have covered 58.8% of the time. And when that underdog has a .500 record or better, the cover rate jumps to 66.6% (10-5 ATS). The Patriots check both boxes tonight.

Matchup-wise, this one plays perfectly into New England’s strengths. The Bills may lead the league in rushing efficiency (No. 1 in DVOA), but stopping the run is exactly what the Patriots do best. They’re stuffing runs at or behind the line of scrimmage on 30% of carries — the highest rate in the NFL — and allowing just 3.1 yards per rush to opposing backs. That’s elite.
If the Patriots can limit first-down gains and force Josh Allen into second- and third-and-long, they’ll be in this game the entire way.
Drake Maye has been one of the most impressive young quarterbacks in football this season. He’s been especially good on third downs — leading the entire league in passer rating and completion percentage when moving the chains. That poise is going to matter tonight against a Bills defense that’s quietly overrated.
Buffalo’s defense ranks 21st in DVOA, but that’s against mostly weak competition. The only top-half offense they’ve faced (Baltimore) hung 40 points on them. Maye’s mobility also helps neutralize Buffalo’s pressure — they rank near the top of the league in pressure rate but convert just 16% of those pressures into sacks, leaving plenty of room for broken plays and QB scrambles to extend drives.
The Patriots also match up well on the ground, as Buffalo’s rush defense is a major weak spot — 30th in yards per carry allowed, and nearly 25% of all rushes against them have gone for 10+ yards. Expect New England to lean on a balanced attack early, mixing in designed runs for Maye and play-action shots to keep Buffalo off-balance.
Josh Allen has struggled more against New England than any other AFC East opponent. He’s 7-6 against the Patriots in his career, with all four of the most recent matchups decided by one score or less.
This New England team is also healthier on defense, with Christian Gonzalez returning to help stabilize a secondary that ranked just 28th against the pass earlier this season. Add in a strong special teams unit — particularly in the return game — and the Patriots have multiple paths to hang inside this number.
Mike Vrabel has been money in the underdog role. As a head coach, he’s covered 64% of the time as an underdog of at least three points. Even better — he’s 21-20 straight up in those spots with a 59% ROI on the moneyline. And when his teams are catching six or more points, Vrabel has still gone 7-7 outright, good for a 102% ROI. That’s remarkable consistency in this exact type of game.

The Bills are undefeated, but they haven’t exactly looked dominant. Their recent wins over the Jets, Dolphins, and Saints don’t move the needle, and they were lucky to escape Baltimore two weeks ago. The Patriots have been competitive in every game this season, and their defense matches up perfectly with Buffalo’s strengths.
I expect Drake Maye to make enough plays with his arm and legs to keep this close into the fourth quarter. Back the Pats to fight, frustrate Josh Allen, and stay inside the number on Monday Night Football.
