Broncos vs. Falcons Prediction: Can Tua Tagovailoa Put Up Points in New Atlanta Offense on Friday Night?

Denver enters as a 3.5-point road favorite, with the Broncos -3.5 (-118), Atlanta +3.5 (-102) and the total at 40.5. Denver finished 14-3 last season and reached the AFC Championship Game before losing 10-7 to New England, while Atlanta went 8-9 and missed the postseason.

Sean Payton plans to give most Denver starters approximately 15 snaps, but Bo Nix will not play. Nix is still working back from the ankle injury suffered during Denver's playoff run and is scheduled to make his preseason debut against Green Bay next week, leaving Jarrett Stidham to lead the offense Friday.

Broncos vs. Falcons Prediction

Atlanta will also give its starters a short appearance. Kevin Stefanski has said the first unit will play roughly one series or 10 snaps, with Tua Tagovailoa starting at quarterback. Michael Penix Jr. is not yet cleared for 11-on-11 action, so Cooper Rush will follow Tagovailoa before rookie Jack Strand finishes the game.

That quarterback rotation is more interesting than a typical preseason opener. Tagovailoa gets his first live opportunity in Atlanta's new offense, Rush brings substantial NFL experience behind him and Denver counters with Stidham, who started last season's AFC Championship Game after Nix was injured. Sam Ehlinger is also available behind Stidham.

The 40.5 total is noticeably higher than most preseason games, but both coaching staffs are giving portions of their first-team offenses legitimate work rather than immediately turning the game over to third-stringers. That creates a better chance of early scoring before the backups take over.

Broncos vs. Falcons Pick

The quarterback depth also gives both teams a chance to keep moving the ball after the starters leave. Tua and Denver's first-team skill players can create an early score, while Stidham, Rush and the deeper rotations have enough experience to prevent the game from completely stalling in the second half.
