Buccaneers vs. Jets Prediction: Can Geno Smith Boost Jets in Return on Friday Night?

New York is a 5.5-point home favorite, with the Jets -5.5 (-112), Tampa Bay +5.5 (-108) and the total at 35.5. The game will air on NFL Network, with both clubs beginning preseason after missing the playoffs last year. Tampa Bay finished 8-9, while New York went just 3-14.

The biggest difference comes at the top of the depth charts. Aaron Glenn has said everybody will play for New York, meaning Geno Smith, Breece Hall, Garrett Wilson and the Jets' defensive starters are expected to see action. Glenn has not committed to an exact snap count, however, so the first-team advantage may only influence the opening portion of the game.

Buccaneers vs. Jets Prediction

Tampa Bay is approaching things very differently. Baker Mayfield will not play, while backup Jake Browning has been dealing with a back injury. That leaves Connor Bazelak and rookie Jalon Daniels positioned to handle most, if not all, of the quarterback snaps against New York.

That sounds like a major advantage for the Jets, and it explains why the spread has climbed above five points. The complication is that preseason football is rarely determined by the first few drives. Once Smith and New York's established starters leave, the matchup shifts toward backups and roster-battle players on both sides.

Bazelak and Daniels should also benefit from getting extended work rather than rotating through only a handful of possessions. Tampa Bay knows exactly what this game is for, evaluating the bottom half of the roster, while New York's first-team edge becomes much less relevant once the game moves deeper into the second quarter.

Buccaneers vs. Jets Pick

Laying 5.5 points requires trusting New York's backups to maintain whatever advantage the starters create. In a preseason opener where playing time remains fluid, taking nearly a touchdown provides the more useful margin for error.
