Texans vs. Panthers Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest NFL Preseason Odds for Friday, August 28th

The Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers meet Friday in Charlotte after spending much of the week working against each other in joint practices. Both coaching staffs have already received the reps they wanted from their starters, turning the preseason finale into a test of quarterback depth and roster-bubble talent.

Texans vs. Panthers Prediction: Can Kenny Pickett Carry Panthers on Friday Night?

Houston and Carolina kick off at 7:00 PM ET at Bank of America Stadium. The Texans are slight 1.5-point road favorites with the total set at 35.5, creating one of Friday's closest preseason markets.

Houston went 12-5 last season behind the NFL's top defense, beat Pittsburgh 30-6 in the Wild Card round and ultimately fell 28-16 at New England in the Divisional Round. Carolina finished only 8-9 but won the NFC South, returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2017 before losing a competitive 34-31 game against the Rams.

Neither C.J. Stroud nor Bryce Young will play Friday. DeMeco Ryans shut down Houston's starters after Wednesday's joint practice, while Dave Canales said Carolina's first units received roughly 75% of the available practice snaps and will also sit.

Texans vs. Panthers Prediction

That puts the emphasis on Kenny Pickett and Kyle Trask for Carolina. Haynes King remains out with a hamstring injury, but Pickett has provided competent preseason play and threw for 137 yards and a touchdown in the Panthers' 34-17 victory over Jacksonville last week.

Carolina is now 2-1 in the preseason after also beating Arizona 33-30 in the Hall of Fame Game. The Panthers' one loss came 29-14 against Buffalo, and their reserve offense has consistently shown more ability to create points than the Houston group expected to play Friday.

Houston is 0-2, losing 27-7 to the Chargers before blowing a 20-3 halftime lead in a 22-20 defeat against Las Vegas. Davis Mills provides the Texans with a legitimate backup quarterback, but Graham Mertz is unavailable and Brett Rypien struggled to maintain the offense after Houston's fast start last week.

The Panthers also have more roster decisions to make deeper down the depth chart, which should keep plenty of players motivated into the fourth quarter. Pickett and Trask are both experienced NFL quarterbacks, giving Carolina a stable pairing for a game where almost every established starter is being protected.

Texans vs. Panthers Pick

Houston is obviously the superior regular-season team, but that is largely irrelevant Friday. The Texans are sitting the players who make them a Super Bowl contender, while Carolina has won two of three preseason games and owns a slight quarterback-depth advantage. Take the points at home.
