Tiger-Cats vs. Redblacks Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFL Odds for Friday, October 1st

Hamilton and Ottawa meet in a matchup between two eliminated East Division teams, with the Redblacks still searching for their first victory after an 0-14 start. Can McLeod Bethel-Thompson build on Ottawa’s improved offensive production against a Tiger-Cats team that has dropped five straight games? Check out this Tiger-Cats vs. Redblacks prediction and best bet for Friday, October 2.

Tiger-Cats vs. Redblacks Prediction: Can Ottawa Finally Snap Losing Streak, Find First Win Over Hamilton on Friday Night?

Ottawa has four opportunities left to avoid the first 0-18 season in CFL history, and Friday’s home game against Hamilton may be its most realistic chance. The Redblacks have remained competitive deep into multiple recent games, while the Tiger-Cats arrive at TD Place on a five-game losing streak after officially being eliminated from postseason contention.

The winless angle adds another betting layer. FanDuel Canada has Ottawa priced at +500 to finish 0-18, a number that could shorten quickly if the Redblacks leave Friday still searching for their first win. Trips to BC and Hamilton remain on the schedule along with a home matchup against Toronto, making this a critical opportunity to finally erase the zero.

Tiger-Cats vs. Redblacks Recent Results

Tiger-Cats (4-11)

Hamilton nearly produced its best win in months last week, pushing the West-leading Edmonton Elks into overtime before falling 37-35. Harrison Frost threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns, while Larry Rountree III rushed for 91 yards and scored on a 39-yard run.

The performance was encouraging, but it still extended Hamilton’s losing streak to five games. The Tiger-Cats have struggled to stabilize the quarterback position since Bo Levi Mitchell suffered a serious ankle injury in July, with Frost, Jake Dolegala and Tre Ford all receiving opportunities in his absence.

Hamilton also enters this matchup with personnel changes around Frost. Receiver Keric Wheatfall is out with an ankle injury, opening the door for Jaelen Gill to make his first CFL start. Defensive backs Jamal Peters and Robert Panabaker are also out, while defensive lineman Julian Howsare was traded to Montreal earlier this week.

Redblacks (0-14)

The record remains historically bad, but Ottawa has shown more offensive life since turning the offense over to Bethel-Thompson.

His first start came in Calgary two weeks ago, when he threw for 379 yards and five touchdowns and put Ottawa ahead 38-37 with less than 90 seconds remaining. The Redblacks ultimately lost 40-38 on Rene Paredes’ 62-yard field goal with two seconds remaining.

Ottawa followed with a 45-31 loss in the rematch, but that score does not completely reflect how competitive the game became late. The Redblacks pulled within 38-31 with fewer than two minutes remaining before Calgary finally put it away with a 60-yard touchdown.

That came after Ottawa lost 26-23 to Toronto on another walk-off field goal, meaning two of the Redblacks’ last three games were decided on the final play. The results have not changed, but the level of competitiveness has.

There are concerns defensively this week. Ottawa will start Kahzir Brown, Sage Ryan and Ahmari Harvey in the secondary, with all three making their first CFL starts. Travian Blaylock and Dionte Ruffin are among the defensive backs ruled out.

Tiger-Cats vs. Redblacks Prediction

At some point, Ottawa has to turn one of these competitive performances into a win, and this matchup provides a reasonable football case rather than simply betting on desperation.

Bethel-Thompson has changed the ceiling of the offense. Ottawa scored 38 points in his first start and 31 in his second, after spending much of the season unable to consistently create explosive offense. Justin Hardy, Keelan White, Kalil Pimpleton and Ayden Eberhardt give the veteran quarterback enough weapons to attack a Hamilton defense that has had problems containing opposing passing games.

Hamilton is also far removed from the team that swept Ottawa last season. Mitchell has been sidelined since July, the Tiger-Cats have lost five straight, and their 4-11 record has already eliminated them from playoff contention. Frost showed some promise against Edmonton, but Hamilton still failed to convert a first-and-goal opportunity into a touchdown during overtime and finished with only 214 passing yards.

Ottawa’s secondary overhaul is the biggest reason for hesitation. Starting three defensive backs for the first time against any professional offense introduces obvious volatility, particularly when the Redblacks have already struggled badly against explosive passing attacks.

The matchup is considerably more manageable than facing Calgary again, though. Hamilton does not bring Vernon Adams Jr. and the same collection of vertical weapons that just produced 520 net yards at TD Place. Wheatfall is also unavailable, forcing Gill into his first CFL start.

There is also a substantial difference between asking Ottawa to cover against a strong opponent and taking the Redblacks at plus money in essentially a pick’em. This is an 0-14 team, but Hamilton is only 4-11, has lost five consecutive games and is operating without its starting quarterback.

The urgency surrounding the winless season only strengthens the spot. Ottawa is currently tied with the 1994 Shreveport Pirates for the worst start in CFL history. A loss would make the Redblacks the first team to begin 0-15, while also moving that +500 winless-season future much closer to becoming a serious possibility.

BC and Toronto await over the following two weeks before Ottawa closes the year on the road against Hamilton. The Redblacks may get another opportunity against the Tiger-Cats, but Friday offers the combination of home field, improved quarterback play and a struggling opponent needed to finally break through.

Tiger-Cats vs. Redblacks Best Bet

Ottawa has come painfully close several times, including consecutive walk-off losses before last week’s defeat against Calgary. Bethel-Thompson has given the offense a legitimate spark, and the matchup becomes much more manageable against a Hamilton team riding a five-game losing streak without Mitchell.

At +105, the Redblacks do not need to overcome a meaningful spread. They simply need to finish one of the close games that has repeatedly slipped away. This is their best opportunity yet to get win No. 1.
