Against the Spread Explained

Put simply, the points spread – also commonly known as ‘betting the spread’ or ‘handicap betting’ – is a sports betting market that means a team must win by a specific number of points / goals, or they must not lose by a specific number of points / goals.

In the example of Ravens vs. Chiefs, the Chiefs are favored by three points. That means that they need to win by more than three points to cover the spread, while the Ravens can win or lose by two points or less, and still cover the +3 spread on their end.
