WM Phoenix Open Prop Bets: Can Kevin Yu, Nicolo Galletti Shine in Scottsdale?

The first signature event of the year at Pebble Beach ended up being a bit of disappointment. The weather was dangerously out of control on Sunday and they had to reduce the event to 54 holes. Wyndham Clark was the fortunate man who finished out on top, after breaking the course record on Saturday with a round of 60. The PGA Tour moves away from the Californian coast to Scottsdale, Arizona, this week for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

If Pebble Beach was disappointing then there isn't a better event to follow. The WM Phoenix Open is guaranteed entertainment each year. The party atmosphere is electric and the players have no choice other than to embrace it.

Below I've targeted two Scottsdale locals that will be making their WM Phoenix Open debuts this week.

Nicolo Galletti will be making his first ever PGA Tour start this week, after qualifying on Monday. He couldn't ask for a better event to make his PGA debut in, as he is a Scottsdale resident living about 300 yards from TPC Scottsdale. He regularly attends the WM Phoenix Open as a fan each year and now he will be on the other side of the ropes, hitting the shots. Galletti played college golf at Arizona State and roomed with Jon Rahm. Since turning professional he has sadly struggled a lot with injuries, which has stunted his progress. He has previously played on the Korn Ferry, Canadian and Latin America Tour. At the tail end of last year Galletti went through three stages of qualifying to earn his DP World Tour card. He wasted no time on his first DP World Tour start, opening with a round of 66 at the Australian Open. He was sitting in sixth after round one and despite struggling in his next couple of rounds, finished T27th.

Nicolo Galletti first came on my radar back in 2020, when the only weekly golf we had to bet on was the Arizona based, Outlaw Tour. Galletti was a regular eachway punt of mine and after a couple of top three finishes, he finally got his win at the Legacy Shootout. I'm forever a fan and I'm excited to chance him this week. He will know TPC Scottsdale like the back of his hand and have plenty of support from behind the ropes. A top 40 bet seems like the sensible approach but I also like the idea of chancing him in the first round leader market.

He impressed on his first ever DPWT start, opening with a 66 at the Australian Open. He will hopefully go one better on his PGA Tour debut, on a course he knows well. If you have the option of eachway or top five after round one, I'd suggest taking that as well. He tee's off at 9:10am. The wind does look like it will pick up after 10am but at such big odds he's worth chancing.

Kevin Yu Top Asian +900 CLICK HERE TO SEE WHICH SPORTSBOOK HAS THE BEST ODDS

Kevin Yu has started the year in strong form. He missed the cut at the Sony Open but bounced back with a third at the Amex and a 6th at the Farmers Insurance Open. Last week at Pebble Beach he finished 58th but continued to hit the ball exceptionally well, tee to green. He lost over 6 strokes on the greens, finishing dead last for strokes gained putting. His ballstriking has been superb and that has always proven important at TPC Scottsdale over the years. This will be his first time playing the WM Phoenix Open; I'm a little surprised he hasn't receieved a sponsor exemption in the past. Kevin Yu had a decorated amateur career and was a standout at Arizona State. He has a house about 10 minutes from TPC Scottsdale and will know the course well.

The top Asian market looks an interesting market. Byeong-Hun An is rightfully favorite, he has started the season well and loves TPC Scottsdale. The likes of Matsuyama, Sungjae Im and Tom Kim have to be respected but they're not playing anywhere near thier best at the moment. It's a good time to take them on and with Kevin Yu, we have a player in red hot form, hitting the ball brilliantly, that knows the course inside out. He looks the value pick and I'm optimistic of his chances this week.

Kevin Yu is out first at 7:20am tomorrow. With the wind forecasted to pick up after 10am, he should get a good chunk of his round done in the better conditions. Yu was recently first round leader at Torrey Pines a couple of weeks ago. He will look to have a similar start back home in Scottsdale this week.
