The Players Championship Tournament and Course Overview: TPC Sawgrass
Designed by Pete Dye, the course is a par-72 and measures 7,352 yards this year. It’s famous for its challenging layout, water hazards, small-yet-tricky greens and iconic par-3 17th “Island Green.” Driving distance tends to be lower at this tournament, partly due to the numerous water hazards that require strategic play.
Translation: This tournament can be dramatic.
Weather often plays a pivotal role at TPC Sawgrass, but it shouldn’t be a major factor until Saturday.
The Players Championship Key Factors for Success
- Tee-to-Green Performance: Strong tee-to-green is critical, given the course’s emphasis on precision and strategy. Long iron play isn’t necessary. The goal is to stay out of the water.
- Approach Play: Precision in approach shots is crucial, given the smaller greens and the need to set up manageable birdie opportunities.
- Putting: While excellent putting isn’t necessary, solid putting can significantly impact a player’s score. You don’t need to prioritize it, but you do need to consider it.
- Par-5 Scoring: Capitalizing on the par-5s is essential, as these holes offer the best opportunity to make up for failures at more difficult par-4s.
The Players Championship DraftKings DFS Picks
PGA DFS Core Lineup:
- Scottie Scheffler ($12,800): Death, taxes and Scottie. As the two-time defending champion, Scheffler aims for a historic three-peat, looking for his first win of the year.
- Sepp Straka ($8,600): Straka has made the past three cuts at TPC Sawgrass, including strong performances recently, making him a reliable mid-priced option.
- Aaron Rai ($7,100): Rai’s recent form is impeccable, particularly excelling in tee-to-green and approach. While his putting is potentially problematic, his course history over the past two years is excellent.
PGA DFS Value Plays:
- Michael Kim ($5,900): Kim has been on fire recently, finishing T13 or better since his missed cut at the Farmers. However, The Players hasn’t been a strong tournament for him, making him a high-risk, high-reward option.
- Jake Knapp ($5,900): Knapp has shown strong form recently, offering significant value at his price point and should be very low-owned.
- Akshay Bhatia ($7,000): Bhatia struggled in the wind last week but has generally been in excellent form. Course history here is obviously limited, with one missed cut last year. He’s risky, but he’ll be very low-rostered.
- J.J. Spaun ($6,700): Spaun’s course history here is…uninspiring. However, he’s shown flashes of brilliance recently.
- Laurie Canter ($6,000): Be cautious here with lack of course history, but Canter has shown potential in recent DP World Tour outings and will be an extremely low-owned, high-upside play.
PGA DFS Additional Plays
- Shane Lowry ($9,100)
- Collin Morikawa ($10,500)
- Justin Thomas ($10,100)
- Nick Taylor ($7,300)
