Buffalo’s Game 1 win was especially encouraging because it did not need a full-volume offensive explosion to take control. The Sabres were opportunistic, dangerous on special teams, and sharp enough in high-leverage moments to punish Montreal’s mistakes. McLeod and Doan each had a goal and an assist, Byram continued his strong postseason from the blue line, and the power play finally broke through after entering the game in a major slump. That gives Buffalo a clear formula for Game 2: keep attacking with pace, force Montreal into penalties, and make the Canadiens chase again.
Montreal’s concern is fatigue and efficiency. The Canadiens just survived Tampa Bay in a Game 7 where they won despite producing the fewest shots ever by a winning team in a Stanley Cup playoff game, then had to jump directly into another hostile road environment against the top-seeded Sabres.
