Canadiens vs. Hurricanes Prediction
Yes, Montreal has been one of the best stories of the playoffs, and yes, they’ve consistently kept games competitive. But Game 1 felt much more like a perfect storm than a true reflection of the gap between these teams. Carolina looked rusty after the long layoff. That’s really what stood out most.
This is still one of the best defensive and forechecking teams in hockey, and suddenly they looked completely asleep early in the game. The Hurricanes gave up four first-period goals after allowing just 10 total goals across the first two playoff rounds combined. That’s not who this team is. And despite the ugly final score, Carolina still dominated possession.
The Hurricanes finished with over 61% shot share and controlled long stretches of five-on-five play. Usually, when a team consistently owns the puck that much, the results eventually follow. That’s especially true at home in a bounce-back spot.
Frederik Andersen also deserves some grace here. The five goals allowed look terrible on paper, but a lot of that came from defensive breakdowns and transition chances where Montreal capitalized almost perfectly. Andersen had been phenomenal throughout the playoffs before Game 1, especially in high-danger situations.
I trust Carolina’s structure to clean those mistakes up tonight. And honestly, I expect a much more aggressive push offensively from Carolina’s top players after Rod Brind’Amour openly challenged the group following the loss. Guys like Seth Jarvis, Andrei Svechnikov, Taylor Hall, and Logan Stankoven should come out flying early. Carolina knows how important this game is because falling behind 0-2 at home would completely shift the series.
Montreal absolutely has dangerous offensive talent. Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky have all been excellent this postseason. But the Canadiens are still a transition-heavy team that thrives off mistakes and chaos. If Carolina tightens up defensively and forces Montreal into more sustained offensive-zone possessions instead of quick-strike opportunities, I think the matchup heavily favors the Hurricanes.
And while Jakub Dobes has been solid overall, we’ve already seen cracks appear when Montreal’s defensive structure breaks down. Buffalo exposed that last round in a complete blowout, and Carolina has the offensive pressure to create similar issues if the game script tilts their way early.

This just feels like a classic playoff correction spot.
The Hurricanes are the deeper, more complete team, and after getting embarrassed in Game 1, I fully expect a focused response tonight.
