Avalanche vs. Golden Knights Prediction
The scores from the first two games may suggest Vegas has controlled the series, but I honestly think these games have been much tighter than the results indicate. Colorado has generated chances, defended well overall, and simply hasn’t gotten the offensive breakthrough you expect from a roster this talented.
At some point, I trust the Avalanche stars to break through. Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar are still capable of completely flipping a playoff game on their own, and this Colorado team remains one of the best transition offenses in hockey when it gets rolling downhill. The Avalanche are too explosive offensively to stay quiet forever.
Vegas deserves a ton of credit defensively. The Golden Knights ranked second in expected goals against during the regular season and have carried that structure into the playoffs. Carter Hart has also been unbelievable lately, allowing two goals or fewer in four straight starts with a ridiculous .956 save percentage during that span. But eventually, regression comes for everyone, especially against an offense with this much firepower.
Colorado has also quietly been elite defensively itself. The Avalanche finished first in the NHL in goals allowed per game during the regular season while ranking top four in expected goals against per 60 minutes. This isn’t a team that needs to win shootouts. And whether it’s Scott Wedgewood or Mackenzie Blackwood in net tonight, I still trust Colorado’s goaltending enough to keep this game under control. Wedgewood posted a .921 save percentage and 2.02 goals-against average during the regular season and has been far better overall than people realize.
The biggest thing for me here is urgency. Colorado knows going down 3-0 is essentially a death sentence in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I expect a desperate effort from the opening puck drop, and historically, elite veteran teams tend to respond well in these types of spots.

Vegas has been excellent, but I think this line is overreacting slightly to the first two games.
This feels like a tight playoff battle where Colorado’s star power finally shines through late.
