BEST BET: Race 3 at Fair Grounds - Steph'sfullofsugar
With limited racing opportunities worldwide, handicappers should be maximizing their wagers and looking for value. The 12-race card at the Fair Grounds in Louisiana on Saturday, March 21 is one such opportunity. There are few standout favorites on the day, which features eight stakes and the $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2). Watch and wager on the card with TVG.
The $75,000 Crescent City Derby goes as Race 1. Sydster is the 3-1 choice on the rail. 9-2 Atta Bouy hasn’t won since breaking his maiden on debut in August, but the son of Midshipman has been second in his last two and his speed figures fit with the field. He missed last out by a neck after being bumped and going quite wide.
The $75,000 Cresent City Oaks is Race 3. On the outside, 7-5 Steph’sfullasugar will be hard to beat. Seb’s Princess is 5-1 morning line, is coming off a win over a mile here last month, and has more experience than most as this will be her tenth start. She was a stakes winner at seven furlongs in October.
Race 6 is the $75,000 Costa Rising Stakes with no clear cut favorite. A Song for Arch is on the improve after winning on this course last out. The son of Songandaprayer is a six-year-old gelding who is 10-1 morning line, has been top three in six of 10 starts at this distance, and in four of seven starts on the course.
Race 8 is the $100,000 Tom Benson Memorial Stakes. Trainer Chad Brown is 7-2 on the morning line with Altea. Dream Passage, who drew the rail, is 9-2 for trainer Brad Cox. She won three in a row last fall, then was second in her 2020 bow at Sam Houston behind Winning Envelope, who is also in here. Florent Geroux will ride.
The Grade 2, $400,000 New Orleans Classic Stakes is the first of the graded events. Silver Dust is the 2-1 favorite, but this division tends to trade wins. By My Standards at 6-1 is very interesting; the son of Goldencents won last year’s Louisiana Derby (G2) over this trip, then was off for eight months after the Kentucky Derby. He returned with a smashing allowance win over this track, and has a recent bullet to his credit.
The $300,000 Muniz Memorial Classic (G2) drew13. Synchrony towards the outside is the early choice, but Rockemperor is 10-1 for Chad Brown in his first start since August. He is Grade 1 placed, and group placed overseas. The son of Holy Roman Emrperor was brought to America for a reason, and did nothing wrong in his first two starts here. Joel Rosario will ride.
The Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) is Race 11 and worth $400,000. 3-5 Finite was a very encouraging winner of the local prep for this, and beating her will be tough. Antoinette on the rail is 12-1 morning line, has won two in a row, and was a stakes winner at Aqueduct last out. Bill Mott trains for Godolphin.
Longshots abound in a wide-open edition of the $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2). Wells Bayou is 8-1 morning line after running second in the Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park. Brad Cox trains the son of Lookin at Lucky, a two-time winner in four starts. Cox also trains 15-1 Shake Some Action, who has won two in a row here.
