Weekend Racing Picks: Belmont Park
TVG racing expert Emily Shields give us her picks for the Belmont Stakes and the rest of Saturday's Belmont card
The June 27 card at Belmont Park includes four stakes races, topped by the $250,000 Just a Game Stakes (G1) featuring some of the best turf mares in North America.
Belmont Park Picks
The four stakes start with the $100,000 Vagrancy Handicap (G3) for fillies and mares going 6 ½ furlongs. Come Dancing returns to sprinting after trying 1 1/16 miles in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom last out. Last year she won four major stakes including the Grade 1 Ballerina. She faces classy sprinter Chalon who returns off a layoff from October, and Royal Charlotte who was a Grade 2 winner at Saratoga last year.
The $250,000 New York Stakes (G2) has seven runners, with the Graham Motion-trained Mean Mary on the outside riding a three-race win streak. Call Me Love breaks from the rail off a second-place finish here June 3, her first try in the United States.
The $150,000 True North (G2) goes as Race 9. Promises Fulfilled and Firenze Fire have the two outside gates in a field of eight. Promises Fulfilled makes his first start of 2020, but he has been a graded stakes winner all three seasons he has raced. Firenze Fire has won three of six on the track.
The $250,000 Just A Game (G1) features the return of 2020 TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Uni. She was a two-time Grade 1 winner last year, and has won three of four on this track for Chad Brown, who also starts the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) heroine Newspaperofrecord, a winner on the track at seven furlongs June 6.
