The Miami Open Round of 16 features a major test for young American Alex Michelsen, who draws one of the toughest assignments in tennis against world No. 2 Jannik Sinner. The odds reflect that gap. Sinner enters as a massive -2000 favorite, while Michelsen sits at +1350 as he looks to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
On paper, it is a daunting spot for Michelsen. Sinner has been one of the best hard-court players in the world for the last two seasons and has already looked sharp in Miami. Alex Michelson vs. Jannik Sinner Prediction
Sinner’s form in Miami has been exactly what you would expect from a title contender. After his opening-round bye, he beat Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 6-3 and then handled Corentin Moutet 6-1, 6-4 to reach the Round of 16. After the Moutet win, Sinner improved to 19-3 in his Miami career, where he won the title in 2024 and previously reached two other finals.
More broadly, Sinner’s 2026 form remains excellent. He came into Miami off a full early-season schedule that included Indian Wells earlier this month, and ATP has highlighted his continued push at the top of the sport. He has looked efficient and in control so far in Miami, dropping just one break of serve across his first two matches and winning comfortably in straight sets both times.
Michelsen, meanwhile, has earned his place in the fourth round with a much tougher route. He beat Mattia Bellucci 6-2, 6-1 in his opener, then knocked off No. 23 Cameron Norrie 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4, and followed that with another comeback win over Alejandro Tabilo 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Michelsen is 9-6 in 2026 entering this match, and those two three-set wins suggest he is competing well and building confidence as the week goes on.
The problem is that Sinner represents a completely different level of pressure than anyone Michelsen has faced so far in this event. Michelsen certainly has a puncher’s chance if he serves well and plays freely, but stunning arguably the best player in the world still feels unlikely. The cleaner betting angle is that Sinner comes out sharp and takes control early, especially with how dominant he has been to start this tournament.
