4 Minute ReadAlex Michelson vs. Alexei Popyrin Prediction: Can Youngster Michelson Advance on Home Soil to ATP Houston Quarterfinal?
Alex Michelsen is back on court in Houston as a -175 favorite against Alexei Popyrin (+150) in a compelling Round of 16 matchup between two big-hitting players trying to build momentum on clay. Michelsen is still only 21, but he is already being priced like the more reliable option here, helped by home-soil advantage and a much steadier 2026 season so far. This will also be the first career meeting between the two.
The contrast in recent form is a big part of the line. Michelsen made a strong run in Miami, reaching the fourth round with wins over Mattia Bellucci, Cameron Norrie, and Alejandro Tabilo before losing a tight two-set match to Jannik Sinner. Popyrin, meanwhile, has had a rougher season overall, entering Houston with just a 2-8 tour-level singles record in 2026, though he did get a needed win in the opening round this week.

Alex Michelson vs. Alexei Popyrin Prediction
Michelsen’s biggest positive is that his level has clearly been trending up. He snapped a long wait for a tour-level clay-court win by beating Coleman Wong 6-4, 6-2 in Houston, and that followed one of the better stretches of his young season after quarterfinal and semifinal runs earlier in the year. Even in the Miami loss, he pushed Sinner hard enough to show his baseline game is in a good place entering this event.
Popyrin is dangerous enough to make this uncomfortable. He beat Patrick Kypson in his Houston opener and has the kind of serve and first-strike power that can protect him in short bursts, especially on a day when Michelsen’s level dips at all. But over the course of this season, Popyrin has not shown the same match-to-match stability, and that matters against an opponent who is coming in with much stronger recent results.
That is why the total is more appealing than the moneyline. Michelsen should be the right side more often than not, but Popyrin has enough serve to hold his way through one close set, and first-time matchups between two aggressive players often take a little time to settle. A tiebreak or a split set would not be surprising here, especially if Michelsen needs a little time to fully settle on clay again.

Michelsen is the deserved favorite and should have the edge in current form, but Popyrin has enough weapons to stretch this match beyond a routine straight-sets result.
