Anthony Edwards Timberwolves hyped

Philadelphia 76ers vs Minnesota Timberwolves Picks and Prediction: Ant's House, Sixers' Backs Against the Wall

Philadelphia 76ers, limping through their toughest stretch of the season at 30-26 in 6th place in the Eastern Conference, travel to face Western Conference 6th-seed Minnesota on the back end of a back-to-back at Target Center on Sunday, February 22, tipping off at 7:00 PM ET. With the Sixers having dropped five straight without Joel Embiid (right knee and shin) and sporting a cold Tyrese Maxey shooting just 25.4% from three over his last seven games, this matchup pits a short-handed Philadelphia squad, also missing suspended Paul George through late March, against a Timberwolves team riding a three-game win streak behind Anthony Edwards' 29.5 PPG as both franchises run in opposite directions in the 2025-26 campaign.

76ers vs Timberwolves Recent Performance

Philadelphia is 30-26, sitting 6th in the East, and limping into Minneapolis on the second night of a back-to-back after dropping a 126-111 decision to New Orleans on Saturday. That's five losses in a row for a Sixers team that simply cannot survive without Joel Embiid anchoring the half court. Nick Nurse put it plainly: "It's really tough. Certainly our toughest moment of the season, for sure." Tyrese Maxey is trying to carry the load at 28.9 PPG, but over the past seven games he's shooting 41.4% from the field and a rough 25.4% from deep. Opponents are swarming him now and he doesn't have a second star to draw the attention. The one saving grace for Philly has been road resilience all season, owning a 16-10 record away from home.

Minnesota is rolling. The Timberwolves are 35-22 and have won three straight, going 7-3 in their last 10 games with Anthony Edwards looking like the best player on the planet right now. Ant-Man is averaging 29.5 PPG, third-best in the league, and just put up 40 on Dallas two games ago. Julius Randle has been the perfect co-star at 22.2 points, 6.9 boards, and 5.4 assists per night. The Wolves rank 5th in both offensive and defensive efficiency, a legitimately two-way team, and they're 20-10 at home this season. One wrinkle: Rudy Gobert earned himself a one-game suspension after picking up his seventh flagrant foul against the Mavericks Friday night, so the interior looks a little thinner than usual tonight.

76ers vs Timberwolves Head to Head

Philadelphia and Minnesota are 34-34 all-time in the series. Minnesota swept both meetings last season. There's no head-to-head data from this season yet, making it a clean slate, but recent form tells you everything you need to know about which direction this one leans.

76ers vs Timberwolves Team News

Philadelphia is down its two highest-paid players again. Paul George remains suspended until late March with no path back before then. Embiid is day-to-day with right knee injury management and right shin soreness, having missed five straight, with every one of those games ending in a loss. His status should be confirmed closer to tip, but even if he suits up, he won't be at full strength after weeks off. Andre Drummond and Adem Bona split the center minutes when Embiid sits, and neither replicates what he does on either end. VJ Edgecombe (15 PPG, 5.5 RPG) and Kelly Oubre Jr. provide secondary scoring, but this offense has no center of gravity without its franchise center.

Minnesota is without Gobert for this one, his suspension serving as a cautionary tale about flailing. Gobert dropped 22 points and 17 rebounds against Dallas on Friday before earning the boot. His absence reshuffles the Wolves' interior, pushing Naz Reid (14.3 PPG, 6.4 RPG) into the starting five and leaning on Joan Beringer for depth. It opens the door to second-chance opportunities for Philadelphia. The Sixers rank 4th in free-throw percentage (81.6%) and tie for 3rd in blocks (5.8 per game), so they can carve out efficient possessions if they attack the paint without a rim deterrent. The catch is that Philadelphia is 29th in opponent offensive rebound rate (33.2%), so every Minnesota miss could become a second look.

Prediction: Timberwolves 120, 76ers 113

The Sixers are on the back end of a back-to-back with five straight losses, a cold Maxey, and no Embiid. Minnesota is rested, rolling, and at home. The Timberwolves win this one. The gap in talent and situational advantages is too much to bridge over 48 minutes.

Minnesota wins, but covering 8.5 is a different conversation. The Timberwolves are a brutal 9-13-0 ATS this season when favored by 9 points or more. Multiple models put the 76ers covering at 54-69% confidence, and the math backs it up: the pace blend projects at around 100.8 possessions, and over that count Minnesota's offensive/defensive edge translates to roughly 2-3 points, not nine. Philadelphia has covered the spread 16-10 on the road this season and is 28-27-1 ATS overall. This team fights to the wire. Even short-handed, they're not rolling over for nine points on the road. Philly covers the chalk.
