Roy Keane leads the race to become next Sunderland manager

Roy Keane has shortened into a best price 8/11 to become the next Sunderland manager and return to a role he held between August 2006 and December 2008.

The 50-year-old, not among the 16/1 or shorter price favourites for the job as recently as Monday, now leads the market ahead of Grant McCann (best price 7/2) – who was sacked by Hull City last Tuesday less than a week after the club was taken over by the Turkey-based Acun Medya Group.

Ferguson to stay at Everton

McCann was a best price 6/1 on Monday when Duncan Ferguson seemed a near shoo-in for the Stadium of Light hotseat – he’s since gone from the 4/6 favourite to a 33/1 outsider.

That’s because it's being reported now that new Everton manager Lampard has convinced the club legend to remain at Goodison Park as part of his coaching set-up.

Other contenders to replace Johnson

Neil Warnock, a best price 16/1 shot just three days ago, has now been cut to 3/1 with one bookmaker but still carries a longer best price of 8/1 to replace Lee Johnson.

A 6-0 defeat to Bolton was the final straw at Sunderland for Johnson, who still leaves the Black Cats well set for a tilt at promotion to the Championship.

They are third in League One, but now sit five points behind league leaders Rotherham having played a game more. Wigan Athletic lie in second place, two points ahead of Sunderland having played three fewer games.

John Terry, priced up as the likeliest next Sunderland manager after Ferguson on Monday, has lengthened considerably from 4/1 to 25/1 in the latest odds.

Next Sunderland Manager Odds:

  • Roy Keane – 4/6
  • Grant McCann – 7/2
  • Neil Warnock – 8/1
  • Patrick Kisnorbo – 12/1
  • Alex Neil – 14/1
  • Neil Lennon – 25/1
  • John Terry – 25/1
  • John O’Shea – 33/1
  • Duncan Ferguson – 33/1
