England World Cup Squad Betting Odds: FOUR players over Evens who should make the final 26

With Gareth Southgate less than a month away from finalising his World Cup squad, we look at four players who should still play their way in.

Marcus Rashford – Best Price 5/4

Many were scratching their heads after finding out of the news Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford had missed out on this latest England squad. After a disappointing campaign last time out, he is ranking as United’s top performer on WhoScored (7.16) and has picked up his side’s most goal contributions in the league (three goals, two assists).

Some players picked in similar positions to Rashford haven’t started the season so well. For example, Jack Grealish is starting sporadically for Manchester City, Jarrod Bowen and West Ham haven’t yet reached the levels of last season, and Tammy Abraham has begun this campaign in the shadow of new Roma signing Paulo Dybala. There is a space in the World Cup squad for Rashford (5/4) and if his club form continues in this vein, it’s hard to envision Southgate leaving him out.

Jadon Sancho – Best Price 2/1

Similarly to his United colleague, the club performances for Jadon Sancho have improved upon last season with the arrival of Erik ten Hag. There seems to be a void of out and out wingers in this England squad and Sancho fits that mould. Maybe Southgate is just wanting to see the Manchester United duo continue their upturn in form over a longer period?

If Sancho and Rashford continue in this vein of form, it’s hard to see the England manager favouring an out-of-form Bowen or Abraham in the 26. 2/1 is an attractive price to back him at.

James Ward-Prowse – Best Price 7/4

At nearly 7/4 odds, it seems rude not to give Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse a mention in this list. Only five midfielders have made more appearances under Southgate than JWP, and after another solid start to the season, it’s hard to see him being left off the plane. He has recently spoken to Sky Sports about the pain of not being selected in the final squad for Euro 2020 and the drive it gives him to avoid a repeat this winter.

A top professional to have in the squad, potentially England’s most dangerous set-piece taker, it’s hard to see a central midfielder from the fringes gets in ahead of himself. Conor Gallagher (now out to 6/1) posed the biggest threat to his spot last season; however, his absence from the Chelsea first team makes it hard to see him called up over JWP.

Ivan Toney – Best Price 11/8

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin out injured, and Abraham not hitting the heights yet of last season, Brentford's Ivan Toney has played himself into the running to be England’s no.2 striker. He has started the season in stellar form, scoring five goals and registering two assists in seven Premier League appearances so far, including a stunning hat-trick at home to Leeds.

As well as his all-round number nine play, Toney’s penalty record is surely something Southgate is taking into consideration. The 26-year-old has taken 25 penalties in his professional career, missing only one (when playing for Peterborough in 2018).

If he continues his scoring form, Toney (now best price 11/8) – who holds an advantage over Abraham in that he plays in the Premier League and competes in front of the English fans every week - he will be a certainty to be on the plane.
