Next England Manager Odds: Pochettino the favourite to replace Southgate

Mauricio Pochettino is the 6/1 favourite to replace Gareth Southgate in the next England manager odds market.

Who are the favourites to replace Southgate as England manager?

Mauricio Pochettino

First on the list of potential Southgate replacements is a name whose appointment would make the most sense - in the short term at least - should Southgate fail to deliver tonight against Wales or as we enter the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup.

Pochettino, now a best price 6/1, turned 50 in March and, arguably, has had his go at the top of the club game having followed up a successful stint at Spurs with a near 18-month spell at PSG.

In September, he was linked with a surprise move to Nice when the club's boss Lucien Favre was under pressure, but reportedly favours a move back to England. Yet, which of the top Premier League jobs are likely to become available?

Four of the six managers in place at the current top six are the biggest four outsiders in the Premier League sack race odds market - Pep Guardiola, Eddie Howe, Mikel Arteta and Erik ten Hag. Only Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp and Spurs' Antonio Conte find themselves further up the list.

Just this week, Pochettino said that he will looking to pursue a managerial return once the World Cup is over, before adding that the idea of managing a national team "excites" him.

Eddie Howe

Second favourite in the next England manager market is Eddie Howe (8/1), but it’s doubtful he’d jump ship given the strength of his position with big-spending Newcastle.

International football management is also often seen as an older man’s game – something, Southgate aside, is backed up by the FA’s most recent appointments.

Fabio Capello was 61 when he was appointed in December 2007, his permanent replacement Roy Hodgson was 64 when he joined in 2012 and Southgate’s most immediate predecessor ‘Big Sam’ Allardyce (for just one game) landed the top job at 61. At 45 years old, you’d expect Howe to stick with the club scene for a while longer.

Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel, a best price 10/1 to replace Southgate, was ruthlessly shown the door by Chelsea after a slow start to the season following a summer in which the Blues spent the most money a Premier League team have ever spent in one single transfer window.

A Champions League winner in his 100-match spell at Stamford Bridge, the timing of his dismissal was still something of a surprise despite defeats to Leeds, Southampton and Dinamo Zagreb in the space of just 17 days.

The man who followed Klopp to both Mainz and Dortmund is still among the favourites to repeat the feat at Liverpool, but could he be tempted by England should Southgate walk away after Qatar?
