Ginger Joe is here to help you decide which of the world’s top five you should be adding to your PGA Championship betslips.
We move on to the second Major of the golf season now and the field is all set for this week's PGA Championship.
My main squad of players is now live here on oddschecker but what I am going to do in this article, is to take a look at the top five players in the betting just giving you a preview of my thoughts with regards to their chances.
This week’s Major takes place at Quail Hollow which require players to hit it straight and long, so it will take a seriously good performance to win around here. Let’s see what credentials the top five in the market have to offer.

Player | Best Price | % Bets This Month |
---|---|---|
Rory McIlroy | 5/1 | 7.0% |
Scottie Scheffler | 5/1 | 5.0% |
Bryson DeChambeau | 9/1 | 7.3% |
Justin Thomas | 20/1 | 6.3% |
Xander Schauffele | 22/1 | 3.7% |
Rory McIlroy 5/1
Rory McIlroy finally became a Grand Slam winner after his win in the Masters this year and he could well back it up here. He has scored well enough since Augusta but if I may share one cause for concern it would be his driving. He was quite poor last week at the Truist Championship and this is usually where he capitalises.
There is no doubt he could just switch it back on at any time and he is a player for the big stages too, but at a course which demands length and accuracy, he will need to bounce back in that department. His iron play and putting have been very strong so no concerns anywhere else through the bag, you would just want him to drive the ball better again.
With that negative aside though, he does hold the course record here at Quail Hollow shooting a round of 61 back in 2015, and he has also won here on four separate occasions. He comes here with an obvious chance and as a player full of confidence right now, it’s hard to make a case against him for this week’s PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler (5/1)
World number one Scottie Scheffler comes into this event in fine form following a nine-shot win in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and he is going to be hard to keep away from winning this week too.
His iron play is absolutely superb and his putting seems to have continued improving as the season has gone on too. If he can keep the ball in the fairway more often than not this week then he is highly likely to be in contention on Sunday.
Outside of his actual attributes, I really like the fact that Scottie is consistent at producing good scores even when he isn’t on his best form and that is what makes him so good. You can back him each-way at 5/1 this week but in golf tournaments I tend to stay clear at those prices.
I wouldn’t put anyone off backing him of course; however, there is some good value elsewhere in this field where you will get better place terms.
Bryson DeChambeau (9/1)
I’d say Bryson DeChambeau is sure to prove one of the most popular picks this week (backed by Niall Lyons at 11/1) with a golf game that can suit nearly every golf course and a profile that hits all the key betting trends. He is generally known as a powerhouse in the game with regular drives of 330 yards plus but his accuracy and control goes very much unnoticed.
Not only is he long off the tee, but he is hitting 65% of fairways on the LIV Tour this season and that driving here would give him a huge chance of getting competitive. His iron play has improved plenty too and the best part of this for me is his distance control.
If you can control your distance well, then it’s unlikely you are going to be too far away and he has become a very consistent player in this department too. He is an outstanding player who will be tipped by many this week and he could add a third Major to his already impressive resume.

Justin Thomas (20/1)
This year Juston Thomas is a fully rejuvenated character and already has a win to his name after beating Andrew Novak in a play off at the RBC Heritage. He also has five other Top 10 finishes including three runner-up efforts and he is arguably the most consistent player on tour right now.
I was a little worried for his game after he got beat in the Valspar Championship after finishing bogey, par, bogey but his ability to bounce back and continue good form since is a major eye-catching trait. In the past few seasons, Thomas has struggled in the final round of tournaments but he is finishing strong this year and could be near his peak ability.
The issue he had seeing out tournaments, came from the fact that he was swinging too fast under pressure but right now, he looks as comfortable as ever on the golf course and this two-time PGA Championship winner has to be considered this week.
Xander Schauffele (22/1)
A player I wouldn’t fancy much this week is Xander Schauffele who has been out of sorts since his return from injury. This time last year he was a model of consistency and looked in contention for nearly every tournament he played and even broke his Major maiden with wins in both the PGA Championship and the Open Championship.
He has nine PGA Tour titles to his name in total and will no doubt get his game back in top shape but he is just a bit shy of his best right now and may need some more time to hit top gear.
He is still shooting scores under par but isn’t quite hitting his irons the same as last season and it’s just leaving his proximity from the hole a little too far away at this point.
No doubt he could still feature a fair way up the leaderboard, but I would be concerned with him this year with regards to win purposes at present and wouldn’t be for me.
