Greatwood Gold Cup Runners Guide

VINCENZO

Progressive Sam Thomas trained eight-year-old who has either won or finished runner-up on his previous seven starts. He finished 2nd on his final start last season over this course and distance before beating Bad at Ascot last time off a mark of 140. The handicapper has only raised him 2lbs which is fair and it is interesting that he is coming here rather than a Cheltenham Festival handicap.

TWINJETS

From the correct stable in Paul Nicholls having won this a record nine times and he arrives having won his first two starts this season. An impressive 10 length winner on his penultimate start over this course and distance, he unseated at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day when sent off 4/1 favourite off this mark.

RODNEY

Kerry Lee trained seven-year-old who has won his previous three starts. He won by 6 ½ lengths and 4 ¼ lengths at Leicester and Hereford before winning narrowly at Ludlow last time in a 0-125 handicap. He now steps up in grade here with Charlie Deutsch retaining the ride.

ISSAM

Eight-year-old who won last time at Kempton beating Madara by 6 ½ lengths off a mark of 136. The handicapper has raised him 7lbs for that success up to a career high mark of 143 but he arrives in form. He was beaten 30 lengths on his only previous start at Newbury.

BLOW YOUR WAD

Ran well on his stable debut for Gary & Josh Moore when 3rd behind both Jonbon and Pic D’Orhy in the Grade 1 Ascot Chase when beaten only 15 ½ lengths. The handicapper has raised him 2lbs for that effort up to a mark of 144. He won his only previous start at Newbury in his career albeit that it was off a mark of 125 and also won the Grade 2 Pendil Novices’ Chase at Kempton in 2024.

HELTENHAM

Finished 2nd over this course and distance behind Twinjets on his first start after a wind operation but fell on his next two starts at Aintree and Ascot. He was ridden to pick up prize money when 5th in the Grade 1 Ascot Chase last time and returns to handicap company here.

Greatwood Gold Cup Trainer & Jockeys To Watch

Paul Nicholls has won this race for a record nine times with Cornish Sett (2006), Natal (2008), New Little Bric (2009), Big Fella Thanks (2010), Aerial (2012), Pacha Du Polder (2013), Sound Investment (2015), Sametegal (2016) and San Benedeto (2019).

Sam Twiston- Davies has won this race twice in recent years on Sound Investment (2015) and Sametegal (2016).

Greatwood Gold Cup Betting Tips

It is extremely rare that a horse who hits the most trends is the complete outsider of the field and I feel TEDDY BLUE (best priced at 25/1) is overpriced at current odds. The Harry Derham trained eight-year-old ended last season in good form winning at both Huntingdon and Kempton before finishing 2nd over 2 miles at this track off a mark of 131.

Teddy Blue won on his reappearance at Ascot off a mark of 131 before slightly disappointing on his next start at the same track. He ran well over this intermediate trip at Musselburgh last time to finish 4th and he has been dropped 1lb for that effort. Paul O’Brien is already jocked up and he could outrun his odds.

Recommended Bet: Teddy Blue 25/1 (0.5pt ew)
