Betting Tip: Amir Khan between Rounds 7-12

After almost a decade of build-up, Amir Khan (34-5) and Kell Brook (39-3) finally deliver the grudge match British boxing fans have wanted for so long. Despite the fight taking place well past its best, the prospect is still a mouth-watering one. This article will try to find some betting angles in a fight that on paper looks like it could go either way.

One of the biggest challenges this fight poses from a betting perspective is that both fighters have been so inactive over the past few years it’s almost impossible to make any assertions regarding their form. Khan fought twice in 2019: against pound for pound star Terence Crawford and what was an exhibition bout in all but name, against a far smaller opponent in Billy Dib in Saudi Arabia. They are also fighters with very different styles and strengths. Khan has infamous speed and uses it to overwhelm opponents whereas Brook is a classic counterpunching boxer. He relies on excellent timing and shot variety to counter his opponents and he carries enough power to hurt and often stop his opponents. It’s a real pick’em fight and makes for a very tough betting proposition. When looking at betting the fight distance, bookies heavily favour the fight to end within the 12 rounds and for someone to get stopped. The best price you can get for the fight to end inside 12 rounds is 8/13, implying a 62% chance that someone gets stopped. Considering Khan’s history of stoppage losses and Brook’s performance against Crawford, this looks like a fair assessment. When looking for the fight winner, the manner of Kell Brook’s last loss to Crawford is a nagging worry. Brook was usually a physically strong and imposing fighter with solid punch resistance but against Crawford he looked very frail as soon as he was hit clean. The fact there is a 163.5lbs rehydration clause in the contracts will also not favour Brook. If he is struggling to get down to a weight limit he never made easily, then his punch resistance may go out the window at the age of 35. For those reasons, siding with Khan as the slight underdog makes sense. If Brook’s timing and reflexes are off and his punch resistance is diminished, then it could be a long night for him. Khan will start fast as he always does and if he is able to find a home for his combinations without getting countered too much, the cumulative punishment could take its toll and Brook fold in the second half of the fight. Amir Khan to win in rounds 7-12 is a chunky 7/1 (compared to 7/2 for Kell Brook to win in the same period) and looks like reasonable value in a fight unlikely to go to the end.
