Portugal vs Uruguay prediction, lineups, results and betting tips brought to you by oddschecker football expert George Gamble.
A Seleção got their World Cup campaign underway by edging a thrilling 3-2 contest against Ghana and they know that a win here could potentially win them the group, depending on what happens earlier in the day between South Korea and Ghana. Uruguay unsurprisingly drew 0-0 in their first match with South Korea and they’ll be hoping their steely defence can serve them well once again.
Portugal vs Uruguay Stats
- Uruguay have kept clean sheets in eight of their previous 10 outings
- Wayne Rooney was the last player to score a World Cup group stage goal against Uruguay, back in 2014
- Portugal started slowly in their first match, with the first goal coming after the interval and Uruguay will be difficult to break down
Portugal vs Uruguay Prediction:
Betting Tip: Half-time draw
Portugal boss Fernando Santo described Cristiano Ronaldo as “one of the best players ever” as he scored the opening goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 65th minute of action. Another four goals followed that one in what turned out to be a fascinating game.
However, the opening 45 minutes was somewhat dire as neither side could find the breakthrough despite going on the attack and it saw the scores level at the break. A similar thing could happen here when they face a tenacious Uruguay outfit.
La Celeste have a habit of frustrating opponents and conceding very few goals, something they also accomplished in their opening match against South Korea as they didn’t concede a single shot on target.
These are two talented sides but both are extremely difficult to break down. If there is to be a match-winning moment, it seems plausible that it will arrive after half-time. As such, the 11/10 available on the score being level after the opening 45 minutes.
Betting Tip: Both teams to score no
In a similar pattern of thinking to the first pick, I don’t think we’ll see an abundance of goals and it could turn into something of a tactical battle between these two managers. Uruguay are exceptionally strong defensively and that’s where they’ll excel.
Veteran Diego Godin will once again be at the heart of their defence and he was utterly dominant in their opening match, winning a colossal eight aerial duels and his experience will be crucial. Paired with Atletico Madrid’s José Giménez, they won’t be chasing too many shirt numbers and an ability to be compact will cause Portugal plenty of problems.
It can be argued that Portugal has the superior attack but when met with a brick wall, it’ll be interesting to see how they navigate it.
Both teams have scored in just one of Uruguay's last 12 outings and I think the 20/23 available on at least one of these sides failing to score makes appeal.
