19:00 Tuesday
The importance of this match cannot be understated as Wales take on British rivals England knowing that they still have an outside chance of securing qualification to the knockout phase.
England could’ve sealed their spot in the next round but were only able to draw 0-0 with the USA and even a repeat of that result can see them qualify.
Wales vs England Stats
- Wales are likely to deploy a back five and it will be tough for England to break them down
- Wales have to go for it here but their intensity should see them receive plenty of cards from referee Slavko Vinčić
- England have kept a clean sheet in five of their last six matches against Wales in all competitions
Wales vs England Prediction:
Betting Tip: Wales most cards
It all comes down to this for Wales as they’ve endured a difficult opening two matches of this World Cup campaign. They started with a draw against the USA but fell to an extremely disappointing 2-0 defeat to Iran, a match that produced the only red card of the tournament so far at the time of writing with goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey given his marching orders.
Rob Page’s side have no choice but to go for it and will want to show a high level of intensity right from the first whistle. It’s obvious that they’re outmatched in terms of squad depth in comparison to England, but they’ll hope they can capitalise on any potential dysfunctionality from the Three Lions.
Gareth Southgate's men are yet to see a single card so far this tournament and they’ll look to contain the situation. I think Wales have shown that they’re guilty on occasion of committing rash challenges and, with all that’s on the line, I like the look of them seeing more cards than England.
Betting Tip: Under 2.5 goals
I mentioned above that there will be a high level of intensity to this match, however, I don't think that will equate to goals. Wales boss Rob Page has opted to play five across the midfield in both matches which has seen Connor Roberts and Neco Williams operating as wing-backs and it would be a surprise if that wasn’t the case once again.
The Dragons will inevitably look to have five at the back in defensive situations and will make themselves hard to break down. But they’re just not efficient going forward and it would be a major shock to see Wales score more than once here in my opinion.
For all the quality that England possess, they often appear to play well below their level. That was evident in their previous match against USA when they drew 0-0 and fans around the country were unhappy with the team selection. However, England have got one foot in the next round and bar any silly mistakes, should be able to avoid defeat in what could turn into a scrappy match.
Wales do not take enough shots and with neither of these two outfits firing on all cylinders, also bearing in mind the magnitude of this clash, I like the look of fewer than three goals being produced in this encounter.
