It’s been a tumultuous campaign for Manchester United. Alarm bells were ringing from the opening match of the season when they edged past Wolves and the performances have remained poor since. The good work that Erik Ten Hag did last season has long been forgotten and each passing game seems to usher the Dutchman closer to the Old Trafford exit door.

The Red Devils were outmuscled and outthought when they were beaten 1-0 at St. James’s Park at the weekend. They looked toothless and invited wave after wave of Newcastle attack. They were fortunate to only lose by a one-goal margin and the signs are ominous ahead of this clash.

Chelsea secured their second home win of the season in their last match. They defended resolutely and held onto their lead to earn a much-needed three points against Brighton.  Mauricio Pochettino’s side are averaging two goals per game on the road in the league this season. They have made progress under the Argentine despite a slow start and a win here could fire them into European contention.

The Blues haven’t beaten Manchester United since their FA Cup meeting in 2020 but five of the six head-to-heads since have ended in a draw. They will be relishing the opportunity to take on a wounded Manchester United and end that winless run.
