Niall Lyons has picked out two bets for this week's Cadillac Championship and a couple of cross-tournament doubles to back.
Cadillac Championship
It's a bit of a treat to have the 'Blue Monster' Doral course back on the schedule as it was always one that produced plenty of drama with water needing to be negotiated throughout the course.
Look at the contenders and winners here down the years and it tells an interesting story. Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, JB Holmes, Tiger Woods amongst others have all won or gone close here and generally speaking it was an event 10+ years ago that was constantly dominated by the bombers.
Wind on a few years and having been removed from the schedule, Doral then hosted a couple of LIV events. They were won by Dean Burmester and Marc Leishman, two sluggers in their own right and the overwhelming evidence is that those big hitters off the tee are still at a significant advantage when it comes to this golf course.
I have to admit I wasn't a million miles away from going with a 1 and done approach to this event and selecting Scheffler.
3/1 is quite fair for someone who clearly has found form with his irons once again following a dip in that department at the beginning of the year. Many of the other big guns are missing or misfiring of late and with Cam Young being his main danger Scheffler must be given due consideration.
I'll add a couple of doubles later on with two I quite like in Europe.

Jake Knapp - 2pts Each-Way

Jake Knapp first came onto most people's radar when he finished 4th at Torrey Pines just over two years ago and in an event there that is often dominated by the longest in the game he has since added another top 5 finish. In 2024 he went on to win at Vidanta Vallarta, another venue favoured by the bombers and those who can hit their long irons really well.
Knapp sits 8th in strokes gained total on the PGA Tour this season and has been simmering all year. His latest 74th at the Heritage can be dismissed a little as he is hamstrung on that golf course and not able to put his strengths to the fore. That being said he still ranked 7th in strokes gained approach for the week and it was only an absolute nightmare on the greens that really held him back.
Prior to that he was a very impressive 11th at the Masters on only his second appearance there and with two made cuts from two at Augusta he could become a bit of a course dog there.
I think all year he has been waiting for a venue such as this where the longest in the game can really put their best foot forward. Coupled with a really strong iron game that he has been displaying all year it looks like the perfect storm and Knapp can land his second tour victory this week.
Jordan Spieth - 1.25pts Each-Way

Jordan Spieth has made the drift towards 50/1 and beyond and I can't resist getting involved. I put him up at 45/1 to win the Masters and although his form at that event from around a decade ago is spectacular this is without doubt an easier event to win.
Spieth enjoyed his best week on the greens in a long time at the Heritage a few weeks ago but for the first time in a few months his approach play didn't turn up which resulted in a tie for 33rd place. What Spieth has done in recent years is add a good deal of length to his driver and that should come in very handy around Doral.
He will need a bounce back with the irons if he is to compete here but the price suggests he is worthy of chancing. He was a general 40/1 for the Masters and bigger here just doesn't add up to me so even though I'm still sceptical of whether or not he's ready to win again, the price dictates he must be included.
It's an event I'm not overly keen on in investing too much and I do think Scheffler will be hard to beat so let's get back to that.
Going 5pts win at 3/1 isn't for many so I'd like to find a way of including him this week and I will do so by having doubles with David Puig and Tom McKibbin in Turkey.
I was surprised that McKibbin wasn't strong second favourite in that event and because of that I went with a heavy stake of 4pts ew.
I also wrote about Puig's chances and that I wouldn't put anyone off having a saver on him as he looked slightly overpriced also. Overall I believe it could be a good week for the favourites and I'll hope that either of these two get the job done in Turkey to give us a bigger interest in Scheffler than getting involved at 3/1.
