CFP National Championship Winner Betting Odds

Two debates dominate the headlines every college football season all year long. The first is who should win the Heisman Trophy. The second is which teams will make and win theCollege Football Playoff (CFP). While the Heisman Trophy definitely has more history behind it, when it comes to sports betting, the CFP is on top. 

US bettors bet millions of dollars on last year’s CFP National Championship, where the Michigan Wolverines defeated the Washington Huskies 34-13. That number will grow even larger for the 2024-25 college football season.

If you haven’t heard, the College Football Playoff is getting much bigger this year. In 2014, it started with a four-team playoff between the top four teams in the country. In the 2024-25 season, there will be 12 teams. 

The top four will get a bye, while teams ranked 5-12 will play in a single-elimination playoff. The teams will then be reseeded to play the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl against the top four teams who did not play in the first round. From there, the winning teams will go on to play in the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl Classic in the semifinals. Finally, the winners will face off in the National Championship. 

This format change will greatly impact how people bet on the CFP. Instead of picking the team with the most talent, like Texas or Miami, this season, more consistently solid teams have a better chance of winning under this format than in the four-team configuration. Of course, the consistent teams will need to be talented as well. 

The 2024/25 CFP betting odds list has teams like Ohio State, Georgia, the Heisman Trophy candidate led Texas, and Alabama as the most likely programs to win the CFP. Other teams in the mix include Oregon, Tennessee, and Penn State. Heisman hopeful Cam Ward probably won’t be lifting the National Championship trophy this winter, with Miami being much lower in the odds of winning the CFP.
