Sun Belt Conference Winner Betting Odds

While not one of the traditional Power 5 conferences, the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) is always one of the most fun conferences to follow in college football. This year is no different. The conference is split into two divisions, with the winner of the East and the West facing off in the SBC Championship Game.

The Troy Trojans have won the conference back-to-back seasons but look set to regress this year after losing head coach Jon Sumrall to the Tulane Green Wave and several players in the offseason. 

Fellow Sun Belt Conference West powerhouses Texas State Bobcats are another team to watch this season. Troy absolutely dominated the SBC West last season, but with the program expected to take a step back this year, the division is wide open. With Jordan McCloud leading the offense at quarterback, the Bobcats have more talent than the Trojans right now. The winner of the West could come down to who wins between Texas State and Troy in head-to-head matchups. 

In the East, the Appalachian State Mountaineers, who lost to Troy in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game last season, are on track to make it to another championship game. The Mountaineers have played in four of the last six Sun Belt Conference Championship Games. Additionally, the program holds the record for the most wins in college football in the playoff era without qualifying for the College Football Playoffs. 

Appalachian State quarterback Joey Aguilar might just be the best player in the conference, so the Mountaineers are strong contenders to win it all this season. 

One team that may give the Mountaineers a challenge in the East is Bob Chesney’s James Madison Dukes. The Dukes went 11-1 last year, its second ever in the FBS. Appalachian State was the only team to beat the program. Other teams that may challenge the SBC title include the South Alabama Jaguars and the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns.

There are plenty of rivalries to enjoy in the SBC, even on teams expected to win the conference. As the Deeper Than Hate name suggests, there is plenty of intensity when Appalachian State plays the Georgia Southern Eagles. Meanwhile, the Battle for the Belt between the South Alabama Jaguars and Troy Trojans gets plenty of attention. There is also the Royal Rivalry between the James Madison Dukes and the Old Dominion Monarchs.
