AL Rookie of the Year Odds: Julio Rodriguez Given 78% Chance to Win the AL Rookie of the Year Race
The American League Rookie of the Year race is one of the tightest races we’ve seen in recent years, at least according to the statistics. However, sportsbooks don’t think the AL Rookie of the Year race is that close. They believe that Julio Rodriguez has already run away with the award. Let's take a look at the AL ROY odds.
AL Rookie of the Year Odds
Rodriguez is given -350 odds, or an implied 77.8% chance to win Rookie of the Year. Meanwhile, Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman is given +280 odds or an implied 26.3% chance to win the award.
This is a closer call than the sportsbooks have it right now. However, Julio Rodriguez has a few advantages here. His batting average is higher, he’s hit more home runs, and he’s driven in more than double the runners.
For voters to turn to Rutschman they would need to value his defense at catcher and his ability to earn a walk more than Rodriguez’s otherwise clearly better offensive numbers. Voters tend to value counting stats over defense, which lends itself to Rodriguez being the significant favorite. However, all it could take is a cold stretch from J-Rod to change everything.
This is one award that sportsbooks are often strong in predicting. The favorite to win AL Rookie of the Year at this date has won the award the last two years. Yordan Alvarez was an underdog with John Means the favorite in 2019.
