This weekend in New York, New York, Amanda Serrano will compete for the undisputed featherweight championship on one of the sport's grandest platforms. This will also be the biggest fight of Erika Cruz's, the current WBA champion, career as she squares off against the champion of the IBO, IBF, WBC, and The Ring belts.
Held at Madison Square Garden's Hulu Theater, let's take a closer look at Serrano vs. Cruz.
Amanda Serrano (43-2-1, 30 KOs)
Serrano (43-2-1, 30 KO) has grown weary of switching weight classes since her physique is no longer capable of moving up to welterweight or down to flyweight. Since last year, she has felt at home at featherweight and now wishes to remain there. Additionally, two of her peers, Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields, were engaging in an exciting struggle to be undisputed champions.
Before Saturday's headline event at the Hulu Theater versus WBA featherweight champion Erika Cruz, Serrano had only participated in one undisputed fight at Madison Square Garden a year prior as Katie Taylor's undisputed lightweight challenger. It turned into perhaps the largest fight in the history of women's boxing.
Serrano began acquiring featherweight belts by defeating Heather Hardy for the WBO title in 2019, Daniela Bermudez for the WBC title in 2021, and Sarah Mahfoud for the last title in 2018. (IBF). Serrano will add another accomplishment to her long list of achievements if she defeats Cruz.
Erika Cruz (15-1-0, 3 KOs)
Cruz was raised around boxing because her father, Guillermo, was a professional fighter. When she gave birth to her son, Cesar Josue, at age 15, she became a single mother, she said her father wanted her to continue fighting to instill more discipline.
Cruz (15-1, 3 KOs) of Mexico won the IBF championship by technical decision against Jelena Mrdjenovich in April 2021. She defended the title twice since, with the most recent victory coming in a September 2022 rematch against the same opponent in which Cruz prevailed in every round.
Saturday will be her second professional fight outside of Mexico; her previous one took place in 2021 at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, when she defeated Mrdjenovich to win the WBA title she is now holding.
For the biggest battle of her career, she will now return to the country on a far larger stage, as a victory alters her life.
