Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants Preview
Around this time last year, during a game against division rival New York Giants, Dak Prescott suffered a terrible ankle injury and was carted off the field in a flood of tears. His season was over. And Dallas’ season was over, too, as the Cowboys could never recover afterward from the loss of their starter and finished the season on a subpar 6-10 record.
The Cowboys are off to a hot start this season and go into this Week 5 contest with a solid 3-1 record. After dropping the first game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mike McCarthy’s side rebounded nicely. Now, with confidence and momentum on their side, they’re set up advantageously in every respect for this weekend’s reprisal of hostilities with the Giants.Â
After clinching their first win of the season last weekend, the Giants strike an unconvincing pose with a 1-3 record. But divisional contests often transcend records and form. So, the Cowboys can’t take anything for granted in this pivotal contest on Sunday. Even the fact that books tip Dallas as the touchdown favorites on the NFL odds board.
Dallas Cowboys Odds & Overview
Any doubts about fitness and form that may have preceded Dak Prescott have been dismissed resoundingly. The Dallas starter is off to one of his best starts in six seasons since taking over from Tony Romo in 2016.Â
In their season opener, the Cowboys gave the Buccaneers a good run for their money, losing to the defending Super Bowl champions narrowly. However, they bounced back a week later with a 20-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium and added wins over the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers to improve to a 3-1 record and a 4-0-0 record against the spread (ATS). Indeed, as things currently stand, the Cowboys are the best performers in the league against the spread.Â
The Dallas offense has been on fire. It ranks third overall on total offense with 420.8 yards per game. The passing offense is 14th overall with 255 yards per game, and the run offense is the second-best in the league with 165.8 yards per game. Finally, they’re the fourth-highest scoring offense with 31.5 points per game.Â
Dan Quinn is the newly appointed defense coordinator for the Cowboys, and he’s made some improvements to that unit, which ranked amongst the worst teams last season.Â
New York Giants Odds & Overview
The New York Giants are off to a woeful 1-3 start, propping up the NFC East basement. The record doesn’t pass the eye test, but the G-men haven’t actually played atrociously either. Besides the lopsided 27-13 defeat to the Denver Broncos in Week 1, Joe Judge’s side had chances in the following weeks.Â
The game against Washington Football Team was particularly disheartening because the Giants were on the verge of victory, with Washington missing its attempt at a game-winning field goal. However, an unfortunate penalty afforded WFT a second crack at the field goal…and, well, the second time was the charm. Similarly, the following week against the Falcons was another missed opportunity as the Giants took a narrow 17-14.Â
Going into Week 4, the Giants closed as the 7.5-point road underdogs to the New Orleans Saints. Few expected the Giants to cover, never mind seize the win at the Caesar’s Superdome. But Daniel Jones and the G-men didn’t get the memo and fought valiantly with a fourth-quarter rally to clinch the 27-21 victory. On the heels of the win, the Giants improved to a 1-3 record and a 2-2 ATS record.

Most books opened with the Cowboys as the 7-point home chalk on Sunday while a few flirted with the Cowboys at -7.5., but, for the most part, the NFL line has held relatively firm since going to press at the touchdown mark. Interestingly, the public is all over the Giants grabbing the points in early betting.Â
The total opened around 50 points but ticked up to 52 points or thereabouts depending on the choice sportsbook as early money took the over.
Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants Betting Preview
Daniel Jones and the New York Giants have had a rough go of it so far, and while they’re coming off their first win of the season, they’re not getting much love from the bookmakers. One win isn’t going to change ingrained perceptions, apparently. This isn’t true of the bettors, however, who are prone to kneejerk reactions. And after the Giants’ solid win over Saints, the overwhelming play is the Giants at +7. Â
Considering lookahead lines had the Giants tipped as the +5 road underdogs before Week 4, getting the Giants at +7 this week feels like a great deal.Â
Yes, the Cowboys are the flavor of the NFL, and Prescott is earning early MVP consideration. Yes, on paper, this looks like a mismatch between a 3-1 and a 1-3 team. However, all that can go right out of the window in a fierce division rivalry. Both the Cowboys and the Giants will be up for this game, and it may well be closer than the NFL odds would have it.
