2023 NFL Draft Odds: 64% of Bets on Jalen Carter to be First Defensive Player Drafted
The NFL season is over and that means it’s time to start looking ahead to the NFL Draft. With quarterbacks the hot topic at the top of the draft, it’s easy to forget that arguably the two best players in the class are both on the defensive side of the ball. Who will go first though? Will it be the EDGE rusher from Alabama or the Defensive Tackle from Georgia? The sportsbooks believe they know.

NFL 2023 Draft Odds
Jalen Carter is currently the favorite to be the first defensive player off the board. He’s given -175 odds, or an implied 63.6% chance. Will Anderson trails behind at +135 or an implied 42.6% chance.
Neither is expected to go first overall though. Despite the Chicago Bears' lack of need for a quarterback, the expectation remains that Bryce Young will go first overall at -130 or an implied 56.5% chance. Carter is fourth on the market at +550 an implied 15.4% chance, while Anderson is fifth at +700 an implied 12.5% chance.
If Jalen Carter does go first overall, it’d be the second straight year a Georgia defensive player has gone first overall. That would mark the first time defensive players have gone first overall in back-to-back years since 1991 and 1992, Russell Maryland and Steve Emtman.
It’d also be the first time defensive players from the same school have gone first overall in back-to-back years in the history of the NFL. Georgia would also have a record sixth player taken first overall, breaking a tie with Notre Dame, USC, and Oklahoma. If the Chicago Bears decide not to move back, we could see a history-making selection.
