Super Bowl 2025 Preview: Early Look at Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles Odds, Spreads
The Chiefs and Eagles will suit up in their exact same white and green uniforms from their 2023 Super Bowl, and will hopefully recreate the same magic we saw in Arizona that day. This time, it'll be from the Caesars Superdome, and everything is on the line for these franchises as the Chiefs try to do the impossible.
Defense wins championships, right? It looks like the old adage will prove true once again, even in this new-age NFL that obsesses over passing offense. The Chiefs and Eagles are both top-five defenses, and both units are far better than their offensive counterparts. But who will play a more locked-down game on Sunday, February 9th in New Orleans? Super Bowl 2025 Preview: Chiefs vs. Eagles
It's no surprise to see both of these teams as some of the best defenses in the NFL, because it's as the old saying goes, defense wins championships. That mantra has been challenged in recent years, with teams focusing more on analytics and trying to squeeze out the most points offensively. But we saw that strategy crash and burn once again in these NFL playoffs, with regular season success failing to equate to a playoff run. Both the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens were eliminated with one combined playoff win. That's the two most prolific offenses in the league going down early, with defensive woes and turnovers preventing them from advancing.
The Chiefs have been in five of the last six Super Bowls for a reason too, with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo leading the charge. He joined the team in 2019 after taking a year away from football, and reprised his successful role with the New York Giants, who he also led to an improbable Super Bowl victory years ago. The Chiefs have been a top-10 scoring defense in four of the last six years, and have taken the greatest leap in the last two seasons. In 2023, they were No. 2 in the league (17.0 ppg), and this year, they're No. 4 overall (19.4).
The Eagles will have something to say about that, with arguably the most talented defensive unit in the NFL. The addition of young, athletic stars has shown in the stat sheet, as they come in ranking first in scoring defense at just 17 points per game. Both teams have formidable rushing defenses, coming in at 8th and 9th and averaging just 105 rushing yards allowed.
However, the clear gap is in the passing defense, where the Eagles are ranked second, only giving up 184 yards through the air. The Chiefs are way back at 19th, allowing over 220 passing yards per game. Despite that potential shortcoming, the Chiefs are a bend, don't break squad. They may have given up 260+ passing yards to Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, but they only allowed one passing touchdown from each in their regular season matchups.
Super Bowl Preview Summary
To wrap it all up, the Chiefs bring an intangible that the Eagles simply don't have, veteran playoff experience. While Philly had a nice run to the 2023 Super Bowl where they fell apart to these same Chiefs, that is the only major experience to note. They crumbled in the wild card round last season after a strong start, while KC has been there and done this five times in the last six years. The roster has remained largely intact outside of the receiving corps and a few defensive positions, and these guys simply know how to win.
When the chips are down and the game is on the line, Patrick Mahomes is always the guy you want under center, with a comeback mentality not seen since Tom Brady's dynasty in New England. If this game is tied or within a field goal during the last few minutes, which it certainly could be, everyone would trust in Mahomes over Hurts to get the job done. And with such similar defenses, strong offensive lines, and playmakers on both sides, sometimes you have to side with things that don't show up on the stat sheet as the Chiefs rocket towards the first-ever Super Bowl three-peat.
